Hi Everyone!
Just created an account even though I have been on the site for a month. This awesome website helped me decide on which breeds I'd buy and I even got my coop plans from here! Saturday the newly built coop will leave the garage and be positioned out in the backyard. I started building the coop early Feb. and March 1st I got the chicks. After searching several Tractor Supply's for chicks I discovered Rural King. At each TSC, they had a poor selection and no one was sure of the breeds. Rural King is kinda far from me but well worth the drive. I ended buying a total of 8 chicks. Two of each breed: Buff Orpington, Rhode Island, Easter Egger, and Barred Rock. Everything seems to be going good, Saturday they will have been here two weeks. I plan to move them out of the small tank and placing them in a much larger one.

I am slightly concerned about the growth development of one of the Rhode Islands. It has stayed considerably smaller than the rest of the flock. Both of the Rhode Islands were exactly the same size the day I got them. The reason why I say slightly is because she's alert, active, and eats like everyone else. She has her feathers coming in at the same rate as the other chicks. She has the same energy level and all, just she's petite. I've named her Mini...I'm sure with Gods sense of humor she'll grow bigger than the rest of them lol.

Since I'm brand new to chicks, does this sound normal for a chick? Thanks in advance!

As long as she is just as active as the others, eating and drinking like they are, poop looks normal, then I wouldn't worry about it. Some chicks can be runts. And some are runts when small, but eventually catch up to the others and can even surpass them in size eventually! Mini may become a Maxi in time!

Good luck with your babies and enjoy all your adventures with them!!

It is normal... Here is a picture of my Red star girls.. Look

at the difference in the two and they were born same day... Have fun with them...She is just as active as the rest... I shared this cause I know it makes me feel better when I see someone else has the same thing going on... I am a newbee at babies.. You will love the RIRs they get big fast once they start growing. We have 12 almost year old RIR's we bought them at 6 months old and were laying when we got them.. Nice size brown eggs....! Have fun!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, as long as she is acting normally and feathering out she is hopefully just going to be a small RIR.

x4- Since she's behaving normally, I don't think anything's wrong with her.

A couple years ago we bought some more chicks, one of which was smaller than the rest of them. As a result, we named her Runt. And would you guess who is one of my biggest hens?
