5 month old hen flew the coop and my fathers dog picked her up genlty and came back to us and put her down... no visible damage but she wouldnt stand up .she layed on her side for a day or so.
I have given her boiled egg and electrolytes and she is starting to stand again however she cant walk right or stand for too long like a toddler. she does eat and drink and loves her yogurt. it has been about 5 days now. how long will this last does any one know? is this shock?
she stays in her own room in the house in a large covered crate and is put out side for a couple hours a day in a large open bottom cage.
Thanks in advance

Maybe, its been a rather long run though.

Can you put her with the others in the cage to see if she perks up? Depression can be quite hard on them physically too.

I would say it's not shock after 5 days - especially since she's having trouble walking/standing. It sounds like there is some sort of injury - perhaps to the back or breast bones or something internal. The dog could have bitten down a little harder than you realized at the time.

Since she is showing improvement and eating/drinking/pooping normally, I'd keep her separated and keep doing what you are doing. If you have vitamins (for poultry) I'd add that to her water and make sure she's getting a little more protein (scrambled eggs, spinach, yogurt, etc.).

I hope she heals for you.

Take care,
Penny

Thank you all.

She does seem better today when I came in with her fresh vitamin water and egg she actually ran (comparatively) to me flapping the whole way. If only she was acting that way before I would never have had to post.
Thanks again.
