New To Farming

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Does any one know of a good set up for free range chickens per acre?
If you only have two acres, I would not attempt to free-range them as they will wander off of your property.

I struck a compromise between confinement to a large run and free ranging by fencing in about a 1/3 acre of my property with electric poultry netting. It is excellent protection from ground predators and I have a solid roof on my run as well as some very large shrubbery that the chickens can run to for aerial predator protection. I have run up to 30 chickens in that 1/3 acre and I always have to mow it as they have plenty of grass to scratch around it.

Hello!

I am new to farming and will be raising Spanish White Faced Chickens as they are an endangered species. I am starting with 24 eggs with 2 acres. Any tips would be helpful! I want to make sure they produce organic healthy eggs. Does any one know of a good set up for free range chickens per acre?

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

We have two acres and free-range about 40 silkies when they're all out, but right now just a couple of dozen. They don't wander off too often, but just yesterday, we saw four in the neighbor's cornfield that hawks would have been able to snatch, so we had to call them back.

We have two herding dogs that should herd them but they don't, however, the border collie and corgi keep the riff raff back from the bordering forest and fields. Solar and electric motion lights help at night, but the chickens are all secured by that point. The lights are constantly scaring varments away by night, and us and our dogs by day so don't really have issues other than bear.

Our yard isn't impacted by the chickens except for the flower beds they make dustbaths in.
