Is this the beginning of a pecking order?

We have 4 RSL pullets. They are about 2 months old. We have only had them for a week, but I have noticed they are making the feathers on their heads and necks puff up when they are staring each other down.

Two of them try to get on the same spot on the roosting pole each night. it is comical to watch them.

One of them runs with her wings halfway open to scare the other hens when they are out in the yard.

Will this sort of thing get worse before the order is established? Or is something else going on?

Sounds like their just working out the final kinks in the totem pole.

Mine were around 2 months old as well when they started getting into small scuffles, but they sorted it all out except for the occasional peck. If they've all be raised together, there shouldn't be any serious problems.

I have one that tries to scare the others that way, too! She actually had the courage/stupidity to saunter right up and peck at my lead hen (who is about 2/3rds bigger than her, and with a bad temper). Boy did she learn her lesson fast!

Oh good! Thanks.

I can just sit out there and watch them for hours. It is funny.

Any thoughts as to how to "tame" them more? When I go to reach in their pen they let out all kinds of sqwaks and run for cover.

I have been taking out one at a time and just holding them and stroking the back of their necks. And bringing them food. The one I take out will get extra treats like strawberries or fresh worms.

I didnt know if there was something else I could do?

You are doing just right. Most of the time, they'll come around if you continue this kind of attention on a daily basis.
