I found a 1938 version for pretty cheap. Do the standards change or just new breeds and colors get added? If working with heritage breeds would it matter how old the edition is?

The standards do get edited now and then, yes. I don't believe the changes are usually significant, but I haven't compared the current version with the 1938 version yet, so take that with a grain of salt. I have a 44th edition SOP, if you wish to compare the text for a specific breed?

It should stay close to the same standard however many breeds have been added since 1938, so I would recommend getting the 44th edition.

The APA standard comes in a soft cover that is considerably cheaper than the hard cover edition. This can be found on the APA website.
