My dogs think that kitty poo is gourmet food.

But I don't let them eat it because I have always assumed that they could catch diseases if I did. Granted it would save on cleaning out kitty litter if I let them in the room with a kitty box but I don't want to risk the vet bills that might come with allowing them free reign in the litter box.

I wonder how feeding cows chicken manure effects our food supply?

Thank you Miss Prissy. My hubby and I are talking about buying a few acres for our own needs. Originally our desire was to provide the animals we consume with more humane manner of life. Learning about the fact that manure is fed to the cows that we later eat makes me want to purchase a few acres NOW.

Silkie's Grandma :

I have also heard of Hogs being raised with cattle, & eating undigested corn from Cattle Manure.

I thought that people who pasture cattle and hogs run them together? I might be wrong on that though.

Ok now i am sick feeling, I am so glad we buy our beef and pork from a farmer in town where we get to see how they are raised and what they eat. I also thought I heard from an old farmer about them feeding cows magnets to fill them up so they would not eat so much. I am not sure how much truth is in that one. I did ask twice like magnets and he said yes in the olden days when he worked on a dairy farm. I just thought those poor animals.

They feed the Magnets to collect any hardware that the cow eats. (nails, barb wire) That way the stuff dosen't pass through the cow & puncture anything. (cows have several stomachs) I am not a dairy farmer, but remember this pratice from my childhood (my brothers worked on Dairy farms) It isn't to fill the cattle up, used to protect the stomach - the hardware sticks to the magnet.

Okay. Here goes my two cents worth.

We have a ranch with cattle, hogs, chickens, geese, ducks, guineas. Our hogs are penned separately because they will dig up your entire ground if left to run free. They do escape once in awhile and they will eat the cow dung as if it is a great treat. We don't feed them cow manure but they will eat it if given a chance. Just as I said the cows do with the chicken manure. The poultry will also pick at the cow manure.

With me knowing all of this, I still would rather eat my own products than eat anything produced in a mass feed lot.

As far as the magnets go, they feed cattle magnets so the magnets will draw any metal the cow may have eaten while grazing. This keeps the metal from going through the digestive system and harming the cow.

Hope this help you understand a little better.
