Be careful. Don't let them get you in the eyeball. That could be a serious injury. I have had one of mine jump on my shoulder and peck me in the lip. Today I bent over and one jumped on my back, then started pecking me in the head. But the eye, that's a bit dangerous.
I have a dark brown freckle on my bottom lip. I guess it must look like a tasty little tick or something. I have had a large chunk of my lip ripped off and as I am screaching and bleeding the chicken is looking at me like "but mom, it is still there, let me get it!!!!!" LOL They have never messed with my nose ring (I generally just wear a tiny stud) I guess the freckle is too tempting!!!
My matriarch English shepherd is allowed into the chicken stall and run with me. She's very gentle and maternal with the chickies (almost 5 weeks old now).
Today one of them pecked her hard right on the wet nose, for no apparent reason -- and immediately discovered why she does not ever want to do that. ROWF! And then chickie screeching and retreat. I guess that chick thought she was a pushover, because she's been so gentle and indulgent. This is a dire mistake that only a naive creature makes.
Rolling, rolling and rolling!!!
I've gotten a beak in the eye and one of the conures at work bit throw my sterling chain and the bail on my raven/pentacle charm and the someone's got an expensive gastrolith because my sterling pentacle ring went missing a couple of years ago...LOL
I have a scaley patch on my arm and Slifer used to just love to peck at it...and skin tags are another treat for a bird to peck...youch!!!
I will not let our chickens get that familiar with us now. About 4 years ago I was a member of this forum and posted about how my husband got pecked in the eye. I missed alot of work because I had to take him to the doctors every day for treatments and he almost lost his eye. It was also very physically painful.
My rooster Nikki has grabbed the barbell in my tounge before...guess I was talking way to much while holding him. And I have one chicken that loved tugging on my lip ring...she to has almost ran off with my nose ring!
Now the kids think its funny and want me to hold chickens up to my face so they can laugh and watch the girls peck at my face.
For some reason my chickies don't peck at my painted toes, I don't know why, they just don't. But moles and freckles are just too tempting, I guess!
It's funny, though, I haven't had them go after many moles lately, I don't know why. I let them out in the evening (they still don't have a run, poor things, so they have to come out when Mommy can stand watch) and they're too busy to bother sitting with me right now, that's probably why they haven't been pecking at me too much.
Years ago, my youngest son was about ten, he came home from school holding his eye. He told me he had been pecked in the eye by a baby quail someone brought in for show and tell. Those nitwits didn't call me, they let him sit through the rest of his class and then sent him home on the bus un Let me tell you, they heard an earful, and had a nice bill to pay for the emergency ophthalmologist we had to go see. Thankfully it was just a scratched cornea and no permanent damage, but it hurt terribly, the poor kid.
