Is this wry neck or something neurological?

This chick hatched a little less than 48 hours ago during the night. I found him in the morning flopping around and laying on his back. Not my first rodeo with flip-floppers like that, and I had another one that kept winding up on his back so I followed my usual protocol of putting them in chick chairs and giving some nutridrench. The other chick spent a day and a night in his chick chair and was on his feet and is now in the brooder with everyone else, but this little guy is not so much ...

I can't keep him in a chick chair because he is literally a chicken Houdini, so I've got him in a sock which is working much better. When you take him out of the sock he goes absolutely nuts for about 5 minutes
but will eventually calm down
I would also like to add that he has TONS of energy and is ridiculously strong. Definitely full of spunk for sure.

When I try to give him nutridrench he goes absolutely nuts the split second I touch his beak with it. I am not a fan of using droppers and syringes with chicks this small due to aspiration risk, so I busted out my trusty tube feeding supplies. I have a TINY suction catheter tube and an insulin syringe that works great (had to tube a chick last year with it) so I have been giving him kaytee exact with some nutridrench this evening. Its not been enough time to see any improvement, but I'm starting to wonder if this is actually wry neck or something more neurological? I've only had one wry neck experience and it was with an adult silkie and was nothing like this chick AT ALL.

He seems really content in his sock and spends a lot of time trying to preen himself. But the way he moves his head, almost like he has vertigo sometimes (he looks like how you feel when you've had too much to drink and need to put a foot on the floor to keep the room from spinning if that makes sense, thank goodness those days are behind me 😬), makes me wonder if it's not something more than just wry neck? Here is another video of him chilling in his sock and trying to preen himself.
He will try to peck at things like a sock string or my necklace, but I can't really give him food and water without him knocking it over or winding up in it.

I live in the literal middle of nowhere and we only have one feed store in town and they were out of selenium paste. I will be making a trip to a neighboring town on Friday and see if their feed store doesn't have some.

I'm hoping someone can give me insight as to whether or not this is truly wry neck, and if not, are there any ideas?

it seems he/she didn't completely absorb yolk. I keep such chicks/ducklings in incubator for 3 days. they usually get well. maybe he/she took long to come out of shell? at least a few more hours in incubator might help.

He wasn't one of the first to hatch but also not one of the last, he was somewhere in the middle of the group. I'm honestly shocked he managed his way out of the shell in the first place! Poor guy.

He is going to have an extended stay in the CHICK-U (aka incubator) for sure. I can't put him in the brooder because he doesn't have much control over where he's going and I think he would wind up getting cold or trampled.

Tomorrow will be day 3, I'm hoping for at least a little bit of improvement since I've managed to get him a good dose of nutridrench. He will stay in the 'bator until he's on his feet for sure. I feel so bad for him 😔 my poor little bud!

I would give the NutriDrench 3 drops daily and also give the contents of a human vitamin E softgel daily along with food and water. Also give a little egg yolk for selenium which can be thinned with drops of water. That can treat wry neck and neurological symptoms. Here is a good buy:

Thank you! I think my mom has some vit E so I'm going to her house later to get some. I'm not sure how many mg hers are. How much is too much? I will make a mixture of all of that and start giving it to him today.

I know it's not remarkable, but I do think there has been some improvement! Hes spending a lot more time "on his feet" (I say that very loosely) rightside up than he was yesterday. I think I'm still going to keep him in the sock for now, he seems to waste a lot of energy flopping around and can't seem to rest without having a flopping spell.

Hello again,

I just wanted to get some opinions and advice.

My little wry neck chick really hasn't made any improvement. I ordered some poultry cell on Amazon but it won't be here until Friday. Tomorrow I am going to call another feed store and see if they have any (or some vit e selenium gel) because I need it sooner rather than later. It's a really long trip over there, and it's a long story no one has time for but I wasn't able to make it over there on Friday, and of course they are closed today due to the holiday.

All of my research indicates poultry cell has the amount of vit e and selenium he needs, as well as b vits, is this correct? Can anyone give me an appropriate dose for the poultry cell? He currently weighs about 40 grams.i have been using ai to try and figure out dosing since I havent been getting any response in the various chicken groups I've asked in, but I don't fully trust it.

I have been giving vit e, b complex, and egg yolk. I was worried I was giving too much since they are human vitamins and he was having some brightly colored watery poop (hence the ai dosing research) so I backed off of them a little. I think the poultry cell will give me a much more precise dose.

My plan is to treat for a week with the poultry cell and see if there is any improvement. If not I'm seriously contemplating culling. I really want to give him a chance first as I know it takes time. How long should I treat before giving up?

I am still having to keep him in a sock because if not he just flops around and peeps continuously in distress. He is able to peck at a mash but it takes him a very long time to eat just a small amount so I've continued to tube feed him about 5 times during the day to ensure he gets plenty of nutrition and hydration. Poops look good now, I'm just concerned he's not getting the correct amount of vitamins.

I'm almost leaning towards this being a genetic neurological problem as opposed to a vitamin deficiency. I have done many many hours of research and would really like someone with firsthand experience to chime in. Any advice, input, opinions, or even encouragement (because I'm quickly losing hope) are welcome and greatly appreciated!

not sure about the dosage but a friend of mine treated wry neck for about 3 weeks.
