Isa Brown roos

My girls are all Isa Browns and are friendly loving girls. They run to me when I'm out in the yard and love to be held. My question is are the roos as easy around people as my girls. Going to be adding nine to my flock and would like one at least to be a roo. Thanks for any info.

Isa brown roos can go either way. They are often bred from Rhode Island Reds and/or New Hampshire Reds (which descended from Malays, an aggressive breed, and Shanghais and Javas, which are non-aggressive breeds). Because their breeding history includes both commonly aggressive and non-aggressive breeds, their temperament is not very predictable.

If you are looking for a breed that will almost certainly turn out friendly (with human interaction, of course), Orpingtons, Jersey Giants, Easter Eggers and Welsummers are excellent.

The absolute worst rooster my parents ever had was an ISA brown. He attacked everything for every reason, but he especially hated my father. Then one day dad happened to be holding a crowbar and he came up swinging.

I agree with the list above, and would also like to recommend Australorps.

If you want a good temprament, though, the best way to ensure that is to find a local place that's getting rid of some mature roosters. They'll be able to describe their boy's temperament to you, and you won't have to deal with an idiot cockerel who's constantly rough on your hens until he figures out what to do.

I've NEVER had an aggressive Bielefelder or Cream Legbar Rooster. However, finding a pure Bielefelder rooster that has not been genetically tainted by the bad stock introduced to Greenfire Farms, and other's, flock would be difficult. The most aggressive roosters I've had so far was a Silkie or Super Blue Egg Layer.
