I was reading that one of the ways you can have a rumples chicken is if the egg was handled to roughly and the chick was damaged during incubation.  Please let us know if you or the breeder gets any more chicks like this.  If you do then it isn't a random fluke from incubation, but something in the birds genetics.

OK...I have a question for all of you who know their isbar chicks well. Lets just say I might have blue isbar chicks and blue Bresse chicks and Hedemora chicks (who come in a crazy assortment of colors.) All three breeds are single combed chicks. All have 4 toes and no feathers on their legs. Any way at this age to tell them apart if I post photos of them?

LOL I'm guessing you didn't basket hatch? That's my only sure way on some breeds to tell them apart. Looking online you are going to have a real problem telling the Bresse from the Isbar until maturity, and even then it may be a guess until they lay. I'm not familiar with the Hedemora but looking online the blues seem to usually have gold on their hackles, it probably starts appearing about 6-7 weeks old. Isbars sometimes get some silver streaks in their hackles but not always. Good luck!

This isn't a hatching issue. This is an all shipped in the same box issue. The good news is I thought we were getting Hedemora's and we did not. So now it is an issue of sorting out two blue breed chickens. They do lay different eggs so that is very good news. The roosters do look different when mature and the Bresse should be much larger. I was hoping for some other clues. I know the Bresse should have blue legs when they are mature, but I am not sure of the Isbar legs. Anything else I should be looking for? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Wow I'm really surprised the breeder didn't mark the chicks for you with them looking so similar.

As for leg color, some of my Isbars have slate legs some have green legs. Not sure what other breeders have experienced. Hopefully someone else will chime in with some other clues.

I have figured out that the Bresse will have white earlobes and the Isbars have red. That will help, but not for a while. Does anyone know how soon the white earlobes should be noticeable?

Has anyone ever heard of a rumpless Isbar? The little girl in the middle below is 8 weeks old and has never had a single tail feather. I was planning on doing some local breeding and now I'm not sure I can breed her. The other four look normal. I know there isn't a "breed standard" per say, but I thought tails were kind of important! Thoughts on what could have happened? Should I still breed her since there isn't a SOP to be held to?

I believe I know who is who in my blue/ splash chicks. Here are four black chicks some of them are Bresse some are Isbars. Who do you think is who? Why? I know that I won't really know for weeks. I thought it would be fun to see if there are any noticeable difference at this age. Thank you for your help identifying these babies.

I picked them up at Dunlap Hatchery. I looked everywhere last summer for them because my daughter had to have a leg band for her 4-h chicken to go to the fair. You think our group would have just pooled resources and ordered a packet of them saving everyone the 20-30 mile round trip drive but no. They were the only place where I live that I could find leg bands. They didn't have numbered ones in the chick sizes so I just numbered them with a sharpie.
