Hi I’m looking to start having free range chickens to control the tick population we have already seen at our house. If you’re trying to rehome adult chickens please contact me! Thanks!!

Welcome to BYC! I don't live near you and I'm not looking to rehome my girls, but I can give you some advice.

Chickens are a lot of work and shouldn't be brought just because someone wants them for something. Make sure you are willing to care for the birds for the remainder of their life. Chickens can live +9 years!

While free-ranging is a great thing for the chickens happiness, predators will quickly snatch all of the flock. A coop is needed if you want to keep your flock alive.

Again, make sure you want chickens. So many people get chicks and adult chickens and end up not being able to care for them or just don't want them, so they get abandoned or passed around like a bag of chips. Having a flock is much more than tick control, it's years of hard work and love for the chickens. Don't end these beautiful creatures lives for something as simple as ticks.

Please don't think I'm being rude, I'm trying to make everyone's life easier! Everyone who is thinking about getting chickens on a wim needs to realize that chickens are a big responsibility before they get them.

I've heard that Guineas are great for tick control and do a good job at running off some predators. They are loud though.

Take a look at the article section for information on how to properly take care of chickens. Obtain knowledge and then decide if chickens are for you.

Not to mention $$$ involved. Coop, security, feed, water, poop control, etc.

House came with chicken coop. I don’t know if I want Guineas if they’re loud. We already have loud trains. I think our place is better for old chickens than in a frying pan or fed to a reptile.
