ISO- Silver Welsh Harlequin or Cayuga Female

We lost one of our ducks a few days ago and our daughter is pretty devastated. She picked him out as a duckling and was very attached. We would like to get a new duck to help her through this (she’s 4yo and it’s her first experience with death). She said she wants a girl this time and she likes Cayugas and Silver Welsh Harlequins. Unfortunately, we only want to add one to the flock and hatcheries won’t ship just one. I can’t find any for sale locally, either. Does anyone know of someone/someplace we can get a single female from that is in Ohio or a surrounding state? We don’t mind driving a couple hours, but more than that is difficult with a toddler and baby.
I'm sorry your daughter's duck died. I really hope you can find one for her soon!!
You could always put an "ISO" or "Looking For" posting on Craigslist, Hoobly, or LSN.

Could you take a small flock of six? I saw this post on Craigslist recently and have been thinking about it ever since.
That’s exactly how I feel! We don’t have enough room but boy do I wish we did.

I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your duck. I hope you’re able to find a duck nearby.
You could ask them if they'd sell you just one female. They may just do it!

Just get them from a hatchery and sell all the ones you don't want! You should check Facebook they have lots of ducks and I'm sure they have WH! I see them a lot when I look at ducks! If you know a lot of people who have ducks ask them if you could have some eggs to hatch! If she's four why does she care what breed she gets?
The problem is, what if we’re unable to sell the ones we don’t want? I don’t want to end up stuck with more than we have room for. I hadn’t thought to check Facebook, so I’ll make sure to do that.

As to why a four-year-old would care about duck breeds, she’s very into ducks and can name pretty much every breed there is. She likes Cayugas because, in her words, “They have really cool eggs and turn into Dalmatian ducks when they get old.” She likes WHs because she just thinks they’re the prettiest. She’s worked very hard to help take care of our flock and was extremely attentive to her duck, Ducky, in his final days, helping me with everything from splinting his leg to holding him while I gave him his shots. If she is dead-set on one of those breeds, I won’t deny her it.

I’m very tempted to email and ask. I’m thinking, based on the way he/she wrote about them, separating the flock might not be an option. I know I wouldn’t separate ours if we had to get rid of them. I would feel too awful.

You could see if someone in your area would split an order from a hatchery for ducklings so you don't have to get so many. That way you could get the breed you want as a duckling. Though I'm not sure you'd want to raise a single duckling.

Unfortunately this isn’t a neighboring state, but I just remembered that Morgan Farms in Fredrick, Maryland sells individual Welsh Harlequins. We have one WH, she is the sweetest and bravest of all our ducks.

Edited to add: and Holderread Farm used to sell adults. It looks like they don’t anymore, but it says at the bottom of the page you can contact them to ask about other possible sources.

Ok, I was just wondering! Cayugas are GREAT ducks! I've never had one but I've always wanted one they are very beautiful ducks same with WH! I "might" get some three WH and maybe you could have some eggs or ducklings? I could ship them to you for your daughter! That's cool that she knows a lot about ducks and its amazing that she helped take care of them when they are sick! I love what she named him!

That’s very kind of you! Thank you for the offer! My worries there would be shipping a single duckling and then raising it. I don’t like the idea of having just one duckling, as it would get very lonely, so we were hoping to get an adult that could be immediately put with our existing flock. I’ve found a few people within a decent radius with Cayugas, but they’re all only selling drakes or male/female pairs. I’ve had no luck finding WH.

I hope you can find some, as I'm really sorry that her duck died I know she took AMAZING care of him. How far are you from Washington "maybe" I could ship her one of my WH hens!

Hahaha, you’re too sweet. We are in Ohio, so that might be a bit too far to ship. I would feel terrible for the duck. I’m sure we’ll find something, it just might take longer than we want. In the meantime, we got her a Ducky lookalike stuffed animal that she can snuggle in his place.
