Isolate?

Normal poop is a good sign. If her crop is still full of liquid I would help her vomit by holding her under one arm, tipping her forward and massaging her crop for a couple seconds at a time. Chickens don't have a gag reflex like people and can easily inhale the fluid if you don't give them time to breath, so be careful and watch some videos of it being done before trying. Once her crop is empty I'd give her a crop flush if you have epsom salt or molasses (1 teaspoon epsom salt in 1/2 cup water or 1 teaspoon molasses in 1/4 cup water). If not then just keep giving acv and a spoonful of yogurt mixed into her food. Massage her crop in an upward circular motion a few times a day to help keep things moving. The exit from the crop to the rest of her digestive system is near the top of the crop so you want to massage up, but not so forcefully that it comes out her mouth again. Here is a diagram to help you visualize.

Thank you so much. I will try this. I have been calling vets all day and they either don’t treat birds or can’t get us in for a couple weeks.

Hopefully this can be resolved with some TLC and natural remedies 🤞

I also recommend getting a chicken first aid kit set up with the basics since you live so far out. Antifungal and anitbiotic creams, vaseline, vetericyn or other antiseptic, syringes and vet/sports wrap and maybe some baytril or amoxicilin are the things I can think of off the top of my head.

I took a closer look in her kennel and I’m actually not seeing any signs of more poop. Like she was, now she’s not. Also, is there a chance something else is causing the large crop and vomit?

Sour crop is often caused by an impaction or obstruction somewhere in her digestive tract. Sometimes it's something they ate (like a lot of long grass or hay can get tangled into an indigestible knot), sometimes an egg stuck in the oviduct can block the digestive tract. In older hens tumors or other illness are often at fault. What she been eating and are you sure everyone still has access to grit?

You can try syringing some oil into her to possibly help ease any impaction but be very careful not to get it into her windpipe. Let her drink as much water as she wants. Do you have epsom salt or molasses for a flush?

Ok- so, I did the upside down massaging and it came out almost instantly. I can tell it’s still full but looks much better. I gave her the molasses mixture along with a small nibble of coconut oil. She seems to be doing ok. I have put her back in the kennel with fresh water and some crushed egg shells as I do not have any oyster shell.

I was thinking about doing the massage one more time before bed. What do you think of that?

I agree, I need to be more set up for home care. I will definitely be collecting my supplies right away.

Thank you so much for your guidance today! You saved me many tears and lots of stress trying to go at it alone!!

Do you have any recommendations as to where I can purchase the amoxicillin or baytril?

Was it the same mucusy fluid as before? I think you said it was white last time which is a bit odd unless it was foamy white rather than milky white. Can you take a picture next time?

She probably won't be hungry, but I always leave food available just in case and think the chicken knows best whether to eat or not. Also egg shells are good for calcium but are too soft to be a replacement for grit which needs to be pebbles, crushed granite, etc.

A normal massage to try and get her digestive system working is good, but I would only "vomit" her when it is very full (it can start overflowing by itself which is dangerous as the hen can aspirate it and essentially drown) or before giving a treatment.

Chickens can take fish mox/aquamox in a pinch, which is available at a lot of pet stores. Tractor supple and other feed stores have tylosin which is good for many respiratory infections as well as things like corid (if you're going to be raising chicks) and dewormers. Baytril is more restricted but I think you can still get it online at allbirdproducts.

Also don't forget vitamins for your chicken kit! A general poultry supplement like rooster booster or nutri drench is good, but also get human calcium citrate tablets in case of egg binding and vitamin B complex and vitamin E pills (for common deficiencies and neurological issues).

It was more of a tan color this time, which honestly could’ve been what it was the first time too, I was just so surprised the first time and it wasn’t too light out. It seemed more mucusy last time- this time it was maybe more comparable to watery pancake mix.

Would sand work until I get get to town?
