recently I isolated a 4 month old hen with a prolapse, but got discouraged and returned her to the flock too early. I just felt bad about keeping her in, as she seemed miserable. Now I realize that she is not healing properly and seems to be in pain, so I'm making one last ditch effort before I give her away to a friend who will no doubt slaughter and eat her. I am fond of this bird, though, and want her to live!
She has been in my tub in a cardboard box with a perch for 48 hours so far. It is almost entirely dark in there. I give her a food and water break every 6- 8 hours and change her soiled litter. She has laid 2 eggs over the 2 days. How long will it take for her to stop laying? I just finished a 3 day course of 1ml Pepto Bismal 2x/day, as advised by a vet to coat her insides and maybe ease her troubles with pooping and laying. Her butt does look a bit cleaner.
In addition to her prolapse, she definitely has a soiled backside that sometimes is caked with poop and/or blood. She was successfully treated for coccidiosis, but still has the dirty butt. I bathe her regularly, but have not cut or plucked any feathers. Please offer any advice you can!! She's very sweet.
