I have about 300 chickens pretty close to my back door. I use de would love to use pine shavings but they are pricy around here. Except for last week, 9" of rain and 80 -90 degrees the odor is in check. Shavings would just finish it off with a fresh smell. I only use it in their stalls because it needs to stay dry. I dust real good in their fluffing areas so they can dust themselves. Yesterday I put a little sprinkle in the nests. I wonder if that is not a good idea. It did not deter them from getting in their boxes today. what do ya'll think?

I use Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) or Stall Dry in my pine shavings, in the nest boxes, the birds run and places they like to dust bathe. As long as you keep the dampness out no stink, no flies, fleas, mites and such and have good ventilation.
This site has good information. It's not the one I was looking for. http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html

Sorry this took so long. Here are some images of my "under the deck" set up.
