Nugget my sweet 9 month old Golden Comet..
Laid an egg yesterday morning by 7am.. by that afternoon (1pm) she was acting like she was trying to lay a second egg.. I left her in peace but by last night she still hadn’t laid and the other chicks were picking on her a little. We had to leave so I put her in the garage and when I got back home.. I brought her in gave her an epsom salt bath and 1/4 of tums (whole tablet 1000).. put her in the garage.. and she slept. This morning she drank water and acted fine at first.

once outside, she started barely walking (waddling) again. I put her in the coop and let the other chickens out.She went straight to the nesting box..3 hours later nothing.

I repeated epsom bath (20mins) and tums tablet.
Put her back in nesting box/coop by herself and closed the door for darkness.
She is still drinking (and I placed electrolytes in her water )

even applied a little olive oil in her vent
she is still laying down not moving and still nothing.

she has pooped some solid and some solid with a little liquid with it since last night.

Any other options or advice. please she is our sweet girl

Maybe you could try giving her a warm bath with her standing on her feet. This can help rehydrate the vent and help her squeeze the egg out.

Update:

I did type this in absolutely desperation while I went to pick up my kids from school.. I also prayed for her while gone!

However, when I got back she had laid a very small (for her) soft shell egg (the skin was yellowish) and she acts perfectly normal now.

she scares me😱 .. why did she act like that soft shell was ready to lay yesterday at 1

She probably started laying that soft shelled egg yesterday. Imagine if you will, that you have wet hands and a pair of wet rubber gloves, now try to put those glove on. I've done this experiment, it can be done, but it's going to take a boat load of grunting and grinding before the task is done.

Is this girl a freshly started pullet or is this a gal that's been laying for awhile and is now suffering these abnormalities? If she's freshly started, she's likely to outgrow the problem as her shell gland (the organ that applies the calcium shell to the soft egg) matures. If she's a hen that didn't have a problem but now does, you might need to look closer at nutrition or underlying disease. She may be having trouble utilizing calcium; may wish to supplement her Vitamin-D (often available as 'calcium with d3' at your local market/pharmacy.
It takes a lot of work for her to expel the soft shelled eggs, and delicate internal coordination to not burst it while it's still inside (whole host of problems can arise from THAT), and if possible you might wish to purchase some poultry antibiotics to keep on hand for just in case.

Since I brought that up, IF an egg breaks inside of her, bathe her in a warm bath (prefer with epsom salt if you have it), just as if you were treating for egg-bound, but occasionally inserting a lubed, gloved finger a half inch or so into the vent while bathing her in an effort to wash out the liquid portion of the egg and reduce the chance of infection, egg yolk peritonitis, etc., then immediately start her on a course of antibiotics. Delay could cause her internal infection (nearly impossible to cure) and ultimately death from sepsis.

I'm not saying this to scare you, but would rather you are prepared with some information on what to do in the event of this sort of disaster.

I'll keep you and your feathered family in my prayers.

Thank you some how I believe I have a duplicate post and not sure how that happened 😖..

she is 9 months, she started laying at 17 weeks, not to early for a golden comet.. but up until 2 months ago we would get a double yoke egg 2 days in a row then a single.. she has laid soft shell before.. but seems to be struggling since one caused a vent prolaps (no prolapse has happened again) she has actually laid 3 in a day before (1 hard and 2 soft) but never struggled this bad..

where do I find antibiotics?
