Last night my little Lhasa was looking out the window. He gave a quiet little bark a and went on alert. I got up and looked outside and saw 3 coons at the front gate. The either saw me or something. So tonight I grabbed my trusty 12 ga. And sat at night looking at the gate. After an hour I saw movement. I was amaized they went under my gate. The largest dropped first followed by a smaller one. Shot gun jammed. I had to track one of them. Looks like I'll be making a coon skin cap. DW didn't think they would be back. I think it's time for a hot fence.

We did that too. I think our predators have slacked since the hog was moved closer to our run. If she hears anything she don't know she tends to bark. Bet that keeps the coons outta our fence. Not even seen tracks this year.

'carefull with the hog around the chickens. We kept free range chickens and hogs. Well one day while feeding the pigs (2) and the chickens got brave and wanted to share the food well the pigs were VERY carfull to let the hens get right in the trough and into feeding and that was it. The hens turned into pig food. Pigs are quick and there was NO stopping them. Just sayin........

I have a hot fence. I have never had anything try to go over but have had critters try to dig under. Once they touch the hot wire they don't come back for more...

oh no I know what you.are saying. My girls are in a run surrounded by a hot wire. Our.hog is hog paneled up. She also has barbed wire up so she doesn't climb out. I just think she is a reason I haven't seen tracks this year.

I was completely unaware that we had any raccoons in my area until this year when my neighbors got chickens. (Not being stupid, I knew they had to be here... I just never saw any signs of them.) I am convinced they don't come around here much because all my livestock is behind electric fencing. Nothing gets in my pens, but me. The raccoons seem to have given up on my birds. But our neighbors recently got birds (all my fault!

) and they have raccoons every night at 10 pm sharp come visiting. They don't have electric fences.

I also vote for pics of the new hat! Good luck and good hunting.

When we first put our chickens outside, we locked up the coop every evening. We had coons come by every other night UNTIL we put up an electric poultry fence. The coons were sure they could figure out how to turn the elecricity off, but they were wrong.

We haven't seen them in our yard since, although we've seen them in the neighbor's yard.
