This role play is open to anyone that would like to join. The story begins in a fictional village with a roughly medieval feel and the discovery of what appears to be a treasure map. Is there hidden treasure to be found? Or only danger and trouble?

The Rules

  • Have fun and help the others participating in the RP have fun too!
  • No vampires, shapeshifters, unicorns or the like. (The characters may potentially encounter fantastical creatures along their journey, but these should not be PCs)
  • No magic.
  • There are no character sheets. If you want to start playing, simply read the story thus far and describe the basics of your character in your post. Not every detail of your PC needs to be worked out up front. If you'd like some help brainstorming how to work a character into the thread, feel free to PM me!
  • If a situation arises that may involve a PC death, please be considerate and make sure that you work it out with the player of that character.
  • You may introduce multiple characters.
  • Don't make a habit of one-liners! Not every post needs to be the length of a novel. But posts like "Sally watched" really don't help contribute to the story.
  • Feel free to contribute details to the world. If you want to, for example, add a long-forgotten, ramshackle hut in the middle of the woods, go for it!

It Begins With A Map...

The old man had lived in a little house on the very top of a hill. Most of the town considered him eccentric or downright odd. He hardly ever ventured out of his home anymore but when he did, he would tell tales to anyone that would listen about strange places and mysterious creatures.

But two days ago in the common room of the pub, in the middle of a grand tale about a huge beast with wings and scales, the man had simply fallen out of his chair and died. As he had no apparent heirs, the townsfolk gave him a small funeral and then promptly walked up the hill to help themselves to the old man's valuables.

Glenn, who had always been considered a bit on the dumb side, came with them. He had to duck in order to fit through the small door, his large shoulders brushing against the frame.

Inside was cluttered, but Glenn made his way toward a large bookshelf. He had never learned to read, but liked to look at the pictures in books. He picked up a large volume and opened the cover. A worn piece of parchment fell to the floor. Carefully, Glenn unfolded it to reveal a map with a small red X marked on it. "What's this?" He asked the first person that walked past.

"It looks like a map, to me." Fleta said, glancing over, gray eyes narrowed as she rummaged through the contents of a wooden chest. She then moved closer to Glenn as she brushed a lock of long, light brown hair from her face, trying to get a better look at the thing he held.

The large young man glanced over at Fleta, blushing slightly over the simple event of having a girl speak to him. He'd lived in the small village for almost a year now, working for the widow Dotta on her small homestead, so he vaguely recognized Fleta, but had never spoken with her before. Perhaps to draw attention away from his flushed cheeks, Glenn quickly held the parchment out toward Fleta so that she could get a better look. "A map?" he repeated thoughtfully, peering at the small bits of script marking the various land features, as if he could read any of it. "You think it's important? Looks awful old."

Fleta was at least a head shorter then Glenn and knew little about him, but she had visited Dotta's homestead many times to buy what the widow grew and had spotted the young man at work in recent visits. She smiled slightly up at him, then looked back to the parchment, "It might be, it surely looks old, what do you think it's of?" She was curious now, then placed a finger on the spot with the X and said, "Do you have any idea where that is?"

"No, I can't read it," Glenn said, his face turning a deeper shade of red at the admission. "But if it was old man Calhoun's, maybe it's somethin' grand. Hey, you think he hid treasure there?" His voice started to gain a slightly edge of excitement as he contemplated that idea, the thought not occurring to him to keep the potential discovery secret from anyone else in the house that might be listening to their conversation. "He liked to talk 'bout treasure. Just last week he was tellin' me 'bout a whole pile of gold coins and rubies and diamonds he found in a cave this one time."

"I guess there could be treasure... I've heard his tales as well, but I never thought there might be some fact in them." Fleta said in a low voice, thinking of all the riches that could be hidden, she had been rummaging through the house looking for just that. "Here, let me read it." She said with a kind smile, holding out her hand for the map. She didn't want him to feel bad about not knowing how to read, her father, before his untimely death only a year earlier, had never known how.

Thea dismounted her large cremello warhorse. After plaiting her long white hair, she walked into the small house and saw many people but one man and woman stuck out in particular. She made her way over to them and looked at the books on the shelf. Father could use some new reading material... She thought. Thea glanced at what the man and woman were looking at. "What might that be, if I may ask?" She wondered aloud.

Glenn handed the old parchment over to Fleta, hoping that she could make better sense of the bits of text inscribed on the map than he could. But she'd barely had a chance to look closely at it when another woman, this time one that Glenn didn't recognize, strolled toward them and inquired about what they were looking at. His cheeks had finally been returning to a normal color, but blazed crimson again as the white haired girl looked at him. "It's ah..." he ran a hand behind his neck and up to his short cropped hair as he gave her an awkward smile. "...I think it's a treasure map!" he announced excitedly. "It was old man Calhouns."

A few other people in the room snickered at Glenn's announcement, but he only looked back to the map and to Fleta, awaiting her verdict.

Fleta didn't want anyone else knowing about the map, so quickly said, "No, it's nothing. Don't be silly Glenn." She held the map behind hear, so it could not be seen. After her fathers death, her mother and three younger siblings were left with nothing, and Fleta had to find a way to care for them all. So now that there was hope of riches to be found, she was not going to give it up.

Thea smiled. "Oh, I see..." She and her father had just moved to their manor after her father had served the King's army long enough to earn a chunk of land. Since she was new, she didn't know anyone around or have any friends. She wasn't about to call the many annoying suitors her friends either. Thea didn't want to ever marry, she wanted to be a knight like her father and serve the King.

Thea turned back to the bookshelf and selected a few novels, little did she know, one was a journal. She moved over to the chest and rummaged around. Thea found a few small glass objects she would give to her father. She decided that she would see if there was anything outside and went to put the items in the saddle bags on her horse. She walked around out side and there was a small wooden box in the back. A child around the age of 9 had caught all the chickens and was selling them to people. Even though the chickens weren't his to sell, Thea bought them anyway. She placed them in the box and strapped it on her horse's large rump. The box had a few holes where there had been knots in the wood so they could breath. Thea mounted up after deciding she was done and walked home. She kept thinking about the paper the man and woman had. It almost looked like a map of some sort. "Hmm..."

(I had to add something about chickens! XD)
