Being a bit of a newbie to this forum and the world of chickens I have to agree that it is disturbing but one of the things about this forum is that it's an incredible learning tool of not only what TO do as well as what not to do. I certainly don't think it was the intention of the OP to leave that rooster to run through the woods with a headache.

I apologize to Veronica. I did not mean for it to be disturbing. It was our intention to have his death be swift and painless.

We raised this roo from a chick and it was incredibly hard to have this happen as he was a pet until nature turned him into the monster he became.

My intention in posting here was to provide info and our story for others who may have to put down their first animal. I find and have found the stories of others who have messed up a tough situation comforting.

As for providing details, I will not. It took us two hours to catch him, not dispatch him. What bothered us was the fact that after DH tried to stun him, he KNEW what was happening and that was what made it so hard.

Again, I apologize to V.

I guess I don't see what's disturbing about it. It's not like you wrung his neck and he took off screaming, that would be a whole different story.

I have to ask why then you kept reading to the end of the thread at the time? If you wander onto a thread that you find disturbing, go to a different thread. I am not trying to be a jerk about this but the OP was not making light of what happened when they told the original story. It doesn't seem like any one in the family was enjoying the situation. There is a lesson to be learned here about how to correctly dispatch a mean roo (suggestions by other posters). This is a situation that we could all face one day even if all you ever order is pullets from hatcheries, the vent sexing is only 95% accurate. This is kinda like TV. If you don't like what's on, change the channel.

Nothing really disturbing, maybe shockingly difficult for the OP and her family. Things happen and now, they are better for learning the bad experience and make it positive the next time they dispatch a roo or suffering chicken.

Slaughtering livestock is never a task that any one looks forward to doing. At least I certainly don't. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it was disturbing or even worthy of a graphic label but I can kind of sympathize with the fear that a rooster who has just escaped his executioner.

I can see myself in your DH's position. Hidden behind the shed mentally preparing to essentially take a life of now semi defenseless animal that I helped raise from a lil fuzzy butt. My wife down the hill a ways waiting patiently knowing how hard it would be on me to do it. And then... A squawk or too. "Stupid bird"... More squawks... "Oh $#@@#@$!" And a bird now realizing the value of true freedom comes madly dashing back into view successfully eluding its now sworn enemy.

Certainly the pit pat pit pat pitpatpitpat.... and Roocifer posts made up for any controversy.

I appreciate you sharing your story and I'm glad you found a way to tell it so that it was entertaining. You found a light-hearted way to share your experiences and benefit the community as well by posting things you tried that didn't go well. There's nothing wrong with trying to find humor in an otherwise painful life experience. I know that I will one day face having to dispatch grown chickens (when we move to the farm and I can hatch my own!

) and I would like to learn all I can from posts like this one.
