It Did Not Go Well

I know I most CERTAINLY am glad this was posted, because it really sealed the deal for me on how would not dispatch my roo - I wanted him to be trussed up so he couldn't get away (rather than attempting to wrangle him and do the axe/butcher knife thing and end up with the same dilemma).

Thank you OP

I thank you, but my keyboard certainly does not!! I just snorted coffee all over my laptop. We've been debating the best way to begin our "dispatching" of the flock. Growing up in a hunting family, we always wrung the neck...but I can just imagine what a stunned rooster yelling its head off in our area would call in! I'm going to get a very, very sharp knife.

THIS is what I love about you guys! Where else can you talk about this stuff? I had to make this had choice recently and didn't feel alone because I could read about YOUR experience and made my own decisions...This I cannot talk about with my Junior League group.

What I know about dispatching Roos comes from my Sainted Grandmother (who would trade chickens - never eating her own). Ive done it with her after watching her do it many times and this is how we did "the deed":

1) Catch Chicken easier said than done
2) Tie legs tight
3) Hold chicken by wings with one hand to floor and step on head lightly to hold in place.
4) Run sharp knife across underside of ,but not through, neck by head about 1 1/2 " back from jaw.
5) Wait less than 3 minutes.

Grandmother told me that chicken goes into shock and does not feel fear or pain this way.
Remember - she was my Sainted Grandmother and as such her word shall not be questioned.

I have to agree with a couple of the others -- why did V read through 3 pages of "disturbing" posts? LOL! I didn't find any of this "disturbing", in fact, this is the funniest post I have ever read! I read all the posts to my daughter and we literally howled our way through it!

All my roosters are sweeties but there are too, too many as I do hatch and I just DON'T need 25+ roosters. Some will be going to Camp Freezer. I'm planning on getting a killing cone if I don't take them to the local processers. They do everything for $2/bird. They do use killing cones and have an auto plucker. You're in and out in about half an hour. However, with ONE mean bird he would definitely be processed here. Congratulations on getting rid of your mean rooster. Is he going to be dinner?

Rooster Reform School was an article I found here on BYC after our x-roo at about 15 weeks old cornered my son in the chicken yard and bit, wing beat, and scratched him all up. We decided to give it a try. You used to be able to find it by searching for it, but I don't know if it is still around anymore.

Well, I'm certainly glad there are roos out there who will meet their end swiftly because of our mistake!
