It Did Not Go Well

I am new to raising chickens. I just want to say thank you! These posts have been really helpful in showing us what to do and what not to do.

I bet he was delicious!

I just saw this thread and I feel for you! I always keep something close at hand in case of snakes, etc....I keep a walking stick outside the coop and a pitchfork, rake, whatever. Good thing as a year ago or more my fav main roo attacked me in the coop. I ran for the walking stick and swung in self-defense. He keeled over. I freaked out thinking I had killed my fav roo! he came to and to this day is very respectful towards me. Same thing happened with my Tom turkey. He had been threatening both my dh and myself. Dh told me to be careful around him in case....... our coop door is at the back of the forty foot long garage. I went inside the garage this past spring and heard him running behind me, I was so scared..I ran and grabbed a plastic pole lying in there turned and swung. Amazingly, I hit him in the head and knocked him out. I thought I had killed him but no, he was just knocked out and had a cut on his head. He is very respectful now. We won't have a mean animal on the place. I think it was just their hormones kicking in to protect the flock...well the roo anyway, I don't know what got into the Tom turkey but all is well now.
We take extra time and effort to keep our flock safe and healthy and love them but you have to be realistic. Break them from attacking and don't pass a bird on to someone who might get hurt.

This is a great thread - very informative for a newbie and entertaining too. We have pullets now and my DH and DS keep saying that they want a rooster - I don't and this thread is why! Not the dispatching of the animal necessarily (which we would do for excess roo's), but the nastiness of the darn things! All these stories of spurs through boots, wing beatings, and more ... yikes!

I have to say though, while the thread was highly entertaining, this was the line that made me LOL:

Yeah, I really don't think we need a roo!

We don't have rooster trouble at my place. We usually have people send us trouble roosters. The ones that attack people and especially children. My wiley lab cross appreciates our neighors donation with a grin and a snap:pop Of course we kill them first in the most conveniant way possible and he gets the prize. I do not allow my dogs to kill animals as it can bring out unwanted behaviors.

My husband shot our mean roo with a .22. He put the gun away, went baco out to get the body, and found the darned bird standing up- barely

... Got the shotgun. End of story. Next time, I'm going to do the cone thing or the string thing (hanging from tree) and the ax.

I felt really really bad about it, since he wasn't sick, but he was MEAN. We have a 6 and 4 year old that he had drawn blood from.... so, no more from him. NO more roos for us either. Ever.

My oldest (18) was out feeding the hens one day and a large Americana roo got him from behind. He quickley grabbed a stick to defend himself. It came at him again and batter up! He came to me and said "dad I am sorry, but I think I killed the Duke" I told him to place him in the box till after dinner. The next day he was up and walking arround. He learned to leave my oldest alone Then he went after smaller children. Come home one day after work and put him down after he attacked my kindergardener. The dog was very appriciative of the offering I gave him. I have rarely killed them by chopping head off. I usually cut the carotid or break the neck, but ocasionally I get a tricky one who can't be caught. If he can't be caught and reoffends out comes the pellet gun. That is my last resort. It can be done with a decent pellet gun. It just takes patience.

Wow, this thread has been funny, LOL. We personally do send all of our mean roosters to "rooster reform school". My personal favorite is the College of Chicken and a Biscuit Soup. LOL.
