It happened :( something attacked them

We let the chickens free range next to the house this afternoon and something attacked them. It was horrible. I have no idea what it even was! I went out to get them again and one was gone and the other injured to where it couldn't be saved. I feel so sick. Right next to the house too! I guess they will have to stay penned up for now on. I don't want to go through this again.

How unfortunate for you

. Chickens are very vulnerable when unprotected by fences or by having people around, and there are very many predators that love a free chicken dinner. In addition, that predator now knows where it can get a meal. Sounds like keeping them in would be wisest for now.

We live in a neighborhood that is very active so I guess I felt safe letting them out for awhile. I was very wrong! My neighbors are outside working now and making lots of noise so I'm hoping that will deter whatever is was from coming back until I can pen them up. I'm out here watching them and they are starting to calm down. None of my neighbors chickens have been touched so I guess that's good. Helpfully once I get them again I can keep them safe
