It"s Getting Cold ,what To Do About The Water?????????

I have also wondered about what to do about water freezing since this is my first winter here in Ct with my chickens.
I asked a freind who also has chickens and she said she doesnt even use a heater! She says as long as you give them a bowl
of water in the morning so they have some water during that day and maybe when you come home from work that they will be okay.
She also said they pecked away at the snow also. Kind of helped me from worrying so much. But since I always go out first thing in
the morning to let them out into their outside coop are and check on them and I do so again when I come home from work- I know Im
good. My coop is not around any electrical outlet to hook up an outside water heater - so I feel a bit relieved they will be okay and I
dont have to worry so much. Hope that helps-

I am also in VT and purchased the heated plastic waterer mail order. Not very happy with the design either. I've dumped it filling it several times and I bet this winter it will be a mess. Haven't plugged it in yet, wondering why the dang thing didn't have a cord attached. Seems like it would be a safer bet than plugging into a wet socket?

I am going with a cookie tin heater..it looks to be about as sturdy as the water heater base, if you do it right, and it cost me 7.50 for the whole apparatus and it took me 5 minutes to put it together.. I am not bothering with a thermostat as I am out there anyway everyday,,so far it works great...sounds like you guys in vermont need a blow torch just to get out to the coop! Elko can get pretty darn cold..but you guys take the cake!
