it seems there is hardly any fans of the rhode island red on here

HUH after all this talk about RIR being so calm and nice I may have to get one. I was told they can be very mean and aggressive that's why I never ordered them. I KNOW they are good egg layers

I see you have quite a mixed bag already.
It is very hard to make accurate assessments about a breed based on a few, or even one, individuals. I suggest you get 10-20 RIR's, keep them as a separate flock, and then see what you think.

I love the post comparing a RIR to a good wife! Priceless!

For the record, love, love, love all the RIRs I've ever had...never had a nasty one all these years! Tough little foragers, good and plenty egg layers, longevity, good mothers...what's not to love? Seem to be smarter than you average bird, also. My rooster caught on real quick who rules the roost in the henhouse...and it ain't him!

This is the same reason that I didn't get any when I ordered my first chicks 8 yrs ago. A man that I knew told me that when he brought some new hens into his coop, his RIR hens killed them

.

Now, this past spring, I bought 8 EE chicks and only 4 RIR's figuring that I'd at least give them a try. I love them and wished that I got more. One of them in particular gets right up in my lap and takes a little nap whenever I go in to visit "the girls".

I have RIR's and wouldn't want anything else, they are good layers, and lay large brown eggs. My ladies are really sweet, but Ihave to admit that my roo is mean to everyone but me.he runs my pitt back in the house when he is outside, I changes His name from Andrew to t rex. He's my little dinosaur.

I love the few RIR that I have. They are the calmest and they all are sweet. My rooster is a sweet little gentelman and I love 'em. I wish I had gotten more as well.

I love them all and super mild mannered .

I have 1 rir rooster and I mean a great rooster that controls this flock .

We have a total of 49 head , and 1 hen setting on eggs .

how old is your chick and do you only have one? Some strains of RIR are mean but I think they are far and few between. Why have mean birds when you can have friendly ones.
Is the chick mean to you or is it mean to the other chicks or chickens? Young chicks will challenge each other, chest bumping and chaseing but that is normal behavior. If it is an older bird and being mean to you, in what way? Is it being mean to the other older birds? Is it a hen or roo?
Guess we all need more information in order to help you out.
