For the past couple of months I have been coming up with some chickens gone. First was my favorite sweetie - Bernedette, then my EE - sweet girl, then just last week something got three of my 6-week old chicks. I was for sure it was hawks, cause they are the only things I have seen around our property. My DH has been telling me.. " I just don't think it is hawks, come on three chicks in one day, do you think hawks would get three in one day, it has to be something else'. Well unconvinced I still believed it was hawks.
Well not now...I was in my bedroom yesturday evening and my DH was downstairs watching tv, I heard my chooks making a ruckus it literally sounded as if they were screaming. So I jumped up and opened our patio doors in our room and low and behold it was the biggest coyote I have EVER seen

just feet from one of my delawares I started screaming and clapping my hands profusly. At first it didn't want to leave it actually began to turn around then turned back toward a chook and I got to the edge of the deck and started screaming, clapping, and sheshing the thing. My DH came running outside with the gun screaming "what is it", I said "It was a coyote'. He said why didn't you grab the handgun next to bed

...I thought about it after I was out there, but I didn't want to turn to get it because I was scared it was going to get a chook if I did. My Dh said "what if that thing came at you". I said "i'da kicked the thing. He said "It would have bit you and given you rabbies". All I could say was "well it was after my chickens"

. My DH said you know there are others, not just one. So after things settled down and all the chooks were scared, they ran to the coop and got on the roost QUICK, I did a head count and two were gone, one of my EE and the only chick I had left which was one of my Bernedettes babies

Oh I was so heartbroken and mad at the same time, My DH said you are gonna have to stop letting them free range (I don't want to, but I don't want predators getting them either). So I agreed no free ranging for awhile. So I get up this morning to open the pop door on the coop and SURPRISE both of my girls that I thought the coyote had taken were standing there at the door waiting to go in
