It Was A Comb-ectomy!!!!

First of all, we have a Golden Comet named Candy Corn, who HAD a lovely comb with a large fleshy point coming off the back of it.

I was out spending some time with the chickens flipping over rocks so they could get some earwigs after yesterdays rain. Blondie and Candy Corn were busily snatching up the pill bugs and earwigs when Candy Corn put her head down and Blondie neatly snipped off the large fleshy point of her comb!!!!! It was a LARGE piece, about a half an inch long, and before I realized what was happening, she ate it. Candy Corn made a small squeak, and shook her head, before the blood started flowing.

We got the blood stopped, and cleaned it with a damp cloth, and I was able to pull the last jagged piece of flesh off of her comb so the wound has very neat edges, and then applied some first aid cream (w/o lidocaine). My boys are out watching to see if anyone tries to peck her head.

What do we do now? Do I need to blu-kote it as her comb is already red? Or is this a wound that they won't notice?

Sorry! Worried chicken mom and this is our first injury that doesn't involve toenails!!!

Wow! That was a freak accident/injury for sure! Hope your little gal is OK. I would think since the comb is already red, there might not be a pecking problem. Hope not. Poor baby!

So sorry this happened to the poor baby. Sounds like you have it under control tho'. If it has stopped bleeding and you have antibiotic on it, that should be just fine.
Watch for infection or picking by others. Isolate her and treat further if it happens.

I'm sorry for your little Candy Corn! Poor baby. I don't know what more you should do to her cone either.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but....

when I read it, I laughed out loud! I can't just picture this happening to me with my silly girls. If it were my kids I would have thumped Blondie and said "Pay attention to what your doing!"

Anyway, I do hope it heals up well and soon.

I'm sorry for your little hen's comb. How awful, and absurd!

I have read on here that pain killers with 'caine' in them are harmful to chickens. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will back this up.

I'd just keep an eye on her and watch for any signs of pecking by the others. I'd suggest if you decide to use Blue Kote that you wear latex gloves while applying it. When ever I've used it I've wound up with purple fingers and it take awhile to get it off.
