It was an Owl...Saw it Happen

I live in Eastern Nebraska. Currently, all the coyote population as well as some fox are suffering from mange. It has really wiped out the population. It's been about 4-5 years with no coyote problems. You don't even hear them right now like you could when I was a kid.

I saw three of them that looked sickly in a newly cleaned corn field about 3 years ago. Reports are though that they are about to make a come back. I hope the reports are wrong...I love my chickens, geese, fainting goats and farm cats...I dread having a coyote problem.

How does a leg snare trap work exactly? What do you "bait" it with or do you bait it at all? Is a leg snare trap just an old fashioned steel type trap?

Horn Owl will take cats, sound like coon on the chicken or an owl. Owl most of the time just leave feathers, they carry off their prey, same with the cat carry them off.

Ugh - so sorry - what a mess. Poor bird. Poor cat.
The cat may be injured and unable to get home without help. I hope she can be found.

More likely a racoon. Possum probably came after to get remains. Racoons almost always yank off heads...!

Good Lord!! There is no shortage of them here, and I don't think there ever was. The ones around us don't have mange. Especially the coyotes. They are actually gorgeous. BTW I'm in eastern Nebraska too.

The opossums around here aren't so blameless, especially the females with their pouches full of babies to feed. They've raided nests and killed the broody hens trying to defend their egglings, killed ducklings & eaten their heads off, even killed a grown hen and gnawed away her head.
