It wasn't playing possum but what to do with babies? Sad Update

Awww...poor little guy, but you are definately (and I see you have been) commended for the try...I've raised a myriad of wild babies - possums, coons, squirrels, fawns...they're VERY tough from such a young age. Good job, and now you'll be better prepared for the *next* time...and there always seems to be one...

Sorry to hear that the little one didn't make it. Prayers for you as that couldn't of been easy. I would think that with one so young you would need a intervinus bottle as they suckle all the time. Also as they are a pouch animal I would think a pouch like holding bag maybe out of fleece might of helped to keep him warm, with maybe a watch in the outside pocket for a simulated heart beat? I know I am nuts but as it is 2 am maybe you all will forgive me. My kids know I am crazy as I stop at all dead possems to check for babies. I don't know what I would do with them but I still check, nuts I know. Here in UP of MI you can't raise wildlife without a permit but the guy next door to me is a Rapter Rescue, and he has taken in other kinds of wild life so I could make them his problem. Again sorry about the lose of that little one

Possums aren't easy to care for, and tiny infants like that are especially hard. You did a great thing in trying, and I think you are awesome, even though you are revulsed by possums. That attitude is exactly how we find the love in our lives, and become enriched and happy.

You're making me think of my ol' pet possum I used to have. OK, he was only a semi-pet. We never did touch him, but he was semi-tame. His mama brought him to us when he was a young 'un and taught him (her? never knew) to eat cat food before she left. That possum spent the winter on our porch and most of the next year. As it grew older, it spent every winter on the porch when food was short, then went to do normal possum things for the rest of the year. RIP Jake. (We assume that's the case, since he's not been seen in a couple of winters now.)

I'm sorry you lost him, I'm a softy for little babies too. I hope he didn't pass anything on to your baby chicks. I would have had him on in a shoe box with washcloth on top of a hot water bottle, and kept him away from the chicks.
