Can anyone please venture a guess into why my Italian laying hen has stopped laying altogether.
i got her last may, she laid up until mid june last year then she just stopped,
she lives with a British Range cock, they are kept indoors in a large cage with plenty of cover, fresh food, water grit the works, they are both healthy birds, so i dont know why she's stopped laying

thanks

If she is alone with the cock, I'd suggest that it's because she's stressed due to over mating. Usually coturnix are kept in ratios of 1 male to 4-7 females, but I'd have thought that she'd look a little thread bare by now if that's the problem, with feathers missing from her back and neck, and also I would have thought that she'd have stopped laying not long after being put in with the male, maybe 2 weeks or so? Unless the male is young and came into sexual maturity after she was put in with him.

Hope this helps :)

both birds were brought at the same time last year, he is very caring towards her, its actually her that pushes him around, she's actually quite an aggressive bird towards people too, i know she's definately a hen, black speckled chest, black and white throat bib, i also know my other is a cock, i have vent sexed him before and he crows, which is about the only way of sexing British Range birds really, but these 2 are just staying as pets, i plan to get some fertile eggs to hatch and grow the hens on for egg layers

Right, with some cocks it will work, obviously you have a gentle one, but I'd still keep an eye on the situation. Next: Lighting, are they getting 14 hours of light per day?
