I've been going through the same dilemma! LOL!
So far, tops on my list are Welsummers (gotta have some of those dark speckledy eggs!)
Orpingtons of any color! I am partial to the buff, though.
I'd love to get some true Ameraucanas. The kids love the idea of blue eggs. But, you can't really get those from any of the major hatcheries.
I've thought about some sex-links, too. But, if I have limited space, I need to get some cornish mixes for meat, so the sex-links aren't a "have-to".
I am thinking about getting some OEGB or some other type of game hens. I lost my one hen this year, and I was always so impressed with her bug-hunting abilities! I was sitting in the grass talking to her one day, and she snapped up a fly in mid air, and never broke eye contact with me!
Was I impressed!!!
She was always the first one to try a bug, worm, or slug, while my Cornish took one look and screamed like a little girl!
She actually laid a decent size egg for her size.
