It's almost time to switch scratch to something different.. Any ideas?

A couple of you have said that you grow your own wheat and stuff for the chickens, where do you get the seed for that? I would love to grow it myself so I won't be so dependent on the feed store! I want to eventually grow all my own chicken feed but I have no idea where to start. I am giving mine right now just plain ole scratch with their other food.

Wild bird seed
Mine are really enjoying it. They have many choices (oats, scratch, lentils, rice, layer pellets, and other assorted cereal grains) to eat and it seems they are choosing the wild bird seed. I read that is it good for them too.

Wrong. I took them a bag of carrot peelings and chopped broccoli, microwaved for 2 minutes.

Well, believe it or not, the wheat I grow in the garden and share with the chickens was originally Black Tip ornamental wheat from Johnny's. I also bought their ornamental millet, which was a foxtail millet like you get for treats for cage birds. You can get a more "reasonable" wheat variety from Johnny's. I think you might just as well go to a pet shop and buy the foxtail millet sprays to use as seed. Might find wheat seed at a garden center.

Mine go nuts for wheat! They lead me to the wheat can every day when I get home from work! I am serious. They meet me at my car and lead me to the can.

Mine get cracked corn a little bird seed, rolled oats, scratch, un shelled sunflower seeds. I grow sunflowers and save the seeds. I have given them the heads off the sunflowers. They ignore them, but let me take some loose seed in to them and they go crazy for them.

Let's see, it is mid-morning and 24° with light snow. (Everything is covered again; the chickens may be okay with going out on it now that they've grown accustomed.) Tomorrow night, the temperature is supposed to go down well into the single digitS' . . . fahrenheit. Ah yes, uh, Spring

!?

4:00 pm yesterday, 72 degrees. 7:00 pm yesterday, 48 degrees, this morning 33 degrees. Definitely spring.

Grass and weeds as I prepare my garden. Also any grubs found. I leave the earthworms in the garden.

Yesterday's high 26°F, 5° at 8AM.

Snow, definitely snow. With fresh water available, they eat snow (as long as they don't have to walk in it

).
