Its Finished! I built my own HUGE incubator! HUGE PICS!!

I wanted buff orpingtons, aracauna & black maran.
Then I saw the price for all of them on ebay!!! Yikes!

I ended up with 48 black ostralorps - they say they hold the world record for egg laying. I'm not looking for records - they guy was relatively close to me & they were the cheapest quantity of eggs on ebay at the time - with shipping its about $0.75 each.

Not bad from what I've seen.

I also ordered 8 welsummer eggs - I guess these are as dark as maran eggs, but don't fade over time. They were not much cheaper though - hense the small number.

If I really crammed them in I could get 98 eggs in mine.

realistically I think 80 would be the max - so my 56 +- depending on breakage & extras will be a nice first run.

Looks great, when you remove the turner, will you put a shelf it is spot? in the same spot? The reason why I ask is, if they are lower the temp will be lower, You want to keep an eye on the temp right near the eggs, I made 1 with 2 shelfs and from the top shelf to the lower shelf was 2 degree diference in a 3 inch difference, even with a fan - so I only use the one shelf, I have yet to find a way to get them both in the safe range at the same time. Great Job & cant wait to see your 1st hatch.. a few bucks hear a few bucks there, seeing you 1st hatch is priceless :-)

Sooo .... Did you paint/seal the inside so the wood doesn't absorb all the moisture and how much does your incubator weigh?

Joe

I can't speak for the previous post - but my bator weighs a TON - maybe 40 lbs.

I have not checked the temp at the bottom of the bator - only near the turner.

I'll give it a try today & see what my results are - I didn't plan to use a shelf.

I HATE the post office tracking system.

It shows the eggs are in Missouri. The problem is that was yesterday - I had a package delivered once & the tracking said it was in new york!

I'm so anxious about it. I don't want them to freeze.

that number is a delivery confirmation number. not a tracking number. it will only update when some one scans the label. from stop to stop.

This is way beyond what I could ever do, but I have one question.

You stated:
You can see inside the lid one of the light sockets. I have two - these were from my brooder lights! I just removed the metal bell & slipped them through holes in the back of the box.

I've accidently burned my hands on those ceramic fixtures, are you concerned about the wooden box catching fire?
