I have come across many people over the years who get it in their head that they know everything about chickens and won't take anything you say into consideration even though they are giving out incorrect information. Recently, I have run into someone who cannot have roosters, but keeps buying chicks that turn out to be roosters. Recently, he brought the birds to an event and right away I could tell they were all roosters. I pointed to a really gorgeous one and said he was beautiful. He then proceeded to tell me it's not a rooster, they are all hens. I took a look at his other birds and out of the group, only one was a hen. I didn't push it and didn't want to disappoint him, but it's a shame because fair is coming up and that is a great opportunity to rehome birds, especially roosters. Last year this same guy had welsummers and I was looking for a rooster. I saw them and asked him out of curiousity if he would be willing to sell me one of the roosters. He told me they were all hens and he was planning to keep them. A few weeks after fair was over I got a phone call asking if I still wanted one of the roosters because it turned out they were all roosters. At that time I wasn't able to take a rooster because I bought one else where.

It's a shame because this family is really nice, but he is so set on believing these birds are hens and then has trouble finding homes for them.

Sometimes you just can't tell people anything.

Hopefully, he will be able to find good homes for them.

I feel that way a lot. A similar situation with my grandmother. She is a very smart lady. She has or has had, goats, horses, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. She runs an animal rescue and works with the local shelter, taking sick, pregnant, unsocial, new mothers, and baby animals. She does a wonderful job, and I ask for her opinion all the time when I have problems with my own animals. That being said, we do some things very differently. Up until my more recent hatches she was an avid supporter of medicated chick starter and totally against unmedicated. Well, I like to raise my chickens without medications whenever possible. Of course when they are ill i will give them medicine as opposed to let them die, but I prefer not to whenever possible. Long story short, I mentioned I was using unmedicated feed and immediately got "Well, you can try, but I lost my whole brood once doing that. I've fme
found that you have to use medicated if you want your birds to live." "Well, Nana, I'm gonna try my hand at it. I've done some research and think I'll be able to do it." "Well, you go on and try then. Just be warned." -_-

About 4-5 weeks later. "Have you had to put your chicks on medicated feed yet?"

Wha? "Yet?!" Gah!
What I actually said. "No, they are doing really well. They are right at the age that coccidia is most prevalent, though, so we'll see how they do."

About a week or 2 after that. "How are your chicks?" "I lost 1 to coccidia and had to put them on medicated feed. The rest are okay though. I'll try again with the next hatch. I think I know what went wrong." "Well, I told you. It didn't go well for me either. I'm convinced that medicated is the way to go." "I know you are."

I was very successful on my next 2 hatches, though, and I think I've won her over. I was even able to keep her chicks for a short time while she was on vacation and get them a good start without medicated feed. I don't think she's ever had to give them meds and they are very healthy.

So yes. I understand people not listening. It irks me to no end sometimes! Maybe after a few times of this guy getting roosters and you telling him, he will begin to trusts your judgment. It sounds like it would be a lot easier for him in the long run.
