It's getting harder, not easier...

We'll think of something. Where there's a will, there's a way! Would it be possible to borrow a car or truck or have someone drive you down?

I dont follow this forum, and I haven't been following this thread, so I have no idea why I clicked on this....

But has anyone suggested the bloodless way? Where you hold the bird in one arm, grab the head with your free hand, wrap your index finger around the beak, put your thumb behind the head and "pop it" severing the spinal cord from the brain.

I've never done it, but if you can be taught how to do it properly I've heard that it is extremely quick, bloodless, and a lot easier than the axe method....

I agree.. it does get harder with each go.

We found that breaking their necks (English method or something like that) and then slitting both sides of the throat to drain was the best. Less blood spatter everywhere. It was a two person job to keep the chicken immobile as though breaking the neck renders them dead, they still flap.

Good luck and try to stick through it! You've already done half the work by raising them and getting them to the freezer and your family's stomachs should make it worth your while.

I just sent you a PM if you want some help.

This is my first post on this web site so I'm not sure how it will come out. This web site has been great in helping me though some problems I had earlier in the season.

Just a thought- but after reading on the chicken hypnotizing threads here a few days ago, and trying it to find out it works REALLY WELL...(and is a REALLY cool party trick...lol) why not "hypnotize" them first, then axe them? That way, the bird is calm, relaxed, not flapping around and it will maybe make it easier for you if you dont feel like you are fighting them. Just a thought, but one we plan on trying with them next time we "dispatch" a rooster....

You could always use the BB or .22 method.

Hold the bird down, place the barrel of the gun next to the head of bird and shoot. This ENSURES the bird is dead and after any movement, you can go ahead and get rid of the head or slice...whichever you prefer.

The bird will bleed out just as well if not better than the axe method.

you sure a BB gun will kill a chicken dead right away?..we do have a BB gun..i might try it..if i knew for sure...thanks, Wendy

I've done it for years, but I do load it with a pellet first. The pellet will "flatten" out and cover a larger area than a BB will.

Don't just take "pot shots" but actually have the bird tied down. It is the easiest way I've found...I'm a good shot...LOL.
