It's going to be super cold.

Well I aint likeing whats happening right now at all. This I have never seen or dealt with here in my whole life. I actually have ice from all the rain forming on my netting on tops of the pen. Can any of my northern neighbors tell me how often to beat on it or what it can take or just any general help at all with this would be helpful. Also I guess my green pea fowl can just shake it off of them and hopefully be okay. Im at a loss here. Any help or thoughts appreciated. Thanks in advance! Shawn P.S. I gotta feeling i aint going to bed tonight and lots of coffee. I wished it would have snowed ...and it may still. But Ice??? Im ignorant.

Hi there, well there isn't a whole lot you can do about ice. We have the kennel shade netting over the tops of our outdoor Pens, that has a very close weave and it traps all the ice and snow. We actually have to put up Extra supports made of 2x4s in order to keep all that weight from tearing the nets. Just a T shaped 2x4 prop, at least maybe your ice will melt quickly. We have snow that has been weighing down our netting for over a week now, it was -14 w/ the wind chill this morning so it isn't going to melt anytime soon, I'll probably end up buying a bunch of new pieces. What are your temps? If your greens are full grown you should really only have to worry about their feet. At least that is what we were told for Fred our Burmese, once mature they are almost as hardy as blues except their feet will get frostbitten quicker. Make sure, if you can, that they do not roost on the ground, they need to be up on a roost so their feet are covered by their feathers. Good luck to you, Mindy

Destin,,I don't know if you have crossed between your poles, cables or wire to help hold the netting up? One thing the more freezing rain that accumlates the heavier it will become. If it's possible to get under the net with a shop broom and bump the netting in several spots, this may break some if it off but if the freezing rain continues you may be doiing this several times to keep the weight low.If you can take it down, maybe roll it off the top posts? The smaller the square size in the netting the more ice it will hold. You could get a weed burner hooked to a 20lb propane bottle and hold it under the netting maybe 3-4 feet underneath it,melting it away? It's weight will eventually break your poles down, plus rip the net all up.I've spent many a time during a predicted ice storm wondering if mine will still be up when I go outside to look,,so far so good here but I'm sure it will happen.Best of luck,,but netting really isn't all that expensive,,it's the poles that supports the net,and the side wall fencing that will make it a job to replace.

Back to price gouging on propane costs,,today a guy came into work that had a 20lb propane tank filled,,the size most of us has on our gas grills,,,$47.75,,,propane weighs 4.2 lbs per gallon,a 20lb tank only holds slighlty less than 5 gallons,,$9.55 a gallon this works out to be.

Thanks all. I did the broom thing twice. My son just did the last time( second time) It may be aggravating but Im staying up all night just to be safe Id imagine. The beating to keep it too heavy on the nets seems to be working quite well. Ill just check em all about evry three hours and hopefully Ill be alright. Peas are staying under lights I put in for em .Those clamp lights with cones(60 watts)is what Im using Thanks for the thoughts and prayers! Ill take em,,,, and right back at yall!

Weather man seems to think all we are going to keep getting this or sleet off and on all night..I like the off part better. That will have a bunch to do with my night.
I know yall must think Im a weenie down here. I can take the ribbing! lol! But seriously I just aint equipped or never seen this kinda crazy thing. I always respected my northern neighbors. Now even alot more so. I honestly think Ill be alright as long as the beatings continue and I dont doze off.

We are getting ice cycles on the side of the house, but I didn't think about the netting getting ice. Dang I hope it doesn't weigh the netting down too much. As long as the greens keep their feet warm they should be fine. Like others have said the toes are the main issue in cold weather.

Mine roost up so I hope their tootsies are okay. Dont know how much Yall had in P' cola. But I hope not alot like here. Not bad at all right now though

Freezing rain coming here today followed by 8"-10" possible snow before ending Sat eve,,it's getting monotonous every weather system that comes across the continent affects the Midwest with snow every single time.
