It's JUST A COOP!!!!

Thought I would chime in....mine is made from a barn that fell down....I like it 'it's rustic'...then I made another run and had to have a coop for the lone rooster....bought a $50 dog house, put a roost in it, put it on a platform and made a cute little ramp....and he sleeps on top!! How do you get them to go inside and sleep?? Supposed to rain all day tomorrow if he has any brains at all maybe he will go inside and get out of the rain....and decide he likes it!!

My coop also serves as my mother-in-laws room when she visits.

Yes they are stupid... I have to force mine to go in. They know the routine now and I can just go out at twilight and they all run around like crazy but usually go into the coop. It took several nights putting them in by hand but they have mostly all gotten the idea.

Poor things they weren't really made to be smart. LOL

I'll just say this about the cool coops... Yes they are nice and if you have that kind of time and money, that is truly awesome. But they aren't necessary. I use an old hoop house and cover it with a tarp. I'm going to use plastic this winter to maximize heat but I've used this for years and it has been successful as a winter coop as well as summer. I am really promoting chickens here in the Kansas City area and I'm training people how to build coops. I'm afraid if they saw all you guy's fancy pent house coops, it'd scare them all away.

Well there are chickens and then there are pet chickens. Plus half the fun is planning, building and tweaking the coop!

Before we set out to build my coop I had three criteria -- 1) it has to be secure, 2) it has to be warm and 3) it HAS to be cute! I'm pretty much the first in my city to have chickens -- a friend in the next city over had her chickens taken away. Our ordinance doesn't prevent chickens -- BUT, if I have some ugly. tattered, piece-meal coop it would take city council five minutes to re-write the ordinance and use me and mine as a bad example as to why. So if I have a cute-cute coop then everybody will cheer for me and want me to keep my birds and they will want some too. It just makes sense to have a cute coop.

Ha ha I wish I had a dollar for every time my husband and I have said that to each other while building our coop! Everything that doesn't come out right, every measuring/cutting mistake, every oops! gets "It's just a chicken coop!" to remind us that it doesn't have to be perfect. What started out as simple and frugal no longer is either. But we're having fun!

--Another crazy chicken lady

You and I must have bought our tickets for the Crazy Chicken Lady boat at the same time, because I'm right there with you! "It's just a chicken coop" became our mantra to remind ourselves not to fret over the things that weren't quite right as we were building the coop and run. My husband especially had to repeat that to himself many times as he was over-engineering the whole thing from the start. But at least our girls have a nice, secure, weather-proof coop to sleep in. And it's cute to boot, even if it isn't quite perfect.

I'm in favor of good looking coops if you can pull them off. But a person can go overboard. I sell hardware to hardware stores and lumber yards. One of my customers told me he had just sent out a batch of lumber and building supplies to a couple for their new coop. The coop was to be $15,000. The sad part was that the coop it was replacing was in the same price range but didn't match the style of their home, so it was to be torn down. They own four chickens. I'm guessing that all our eggs taste as good as theirs and our hens are as happy. More is not always better.
