DH and I made a deal. Since we are getting our tax return in 2 parts, he can have the larger Federal check to do what HE wants and I get the smaller State check for what I want.
SOOOO...guess what *I* want?
Heh. Along with gas money to go back down to TN and pick up my mare, (10 hrs each way, ugh!) I am going to build me a nice little coop, order some chicks and start over again!
I figure on ending up with about 15- 20 hens and maybe a couple of turkeys. I am still debating the ducks. They were fun but I don't know if I want to go through the mess and hassle of having to construct some sort of pond when they get bigger. (the pond in the pasture is too far from the house/barn for me to feel comfortable about predators.) But they were cute....and fun to watch...and cute.....and they did quack at my car when I came home every day, just like the dogs.... and did I mention cute?

Aww, congratulations! There's nothing more exciting than starting all over with chicks. Although some people hate the coop-building part, I love it and find it very fun and exciting.

Buuuy some ducks...they're just about the cutest little things. Or, maybe you could get geese. Geese are cute too, but they can fend for themselves. They're evil little suckers.

um, what took you so long! we've been waiting forever! i hope you are e-filing so we don't have to wait long to see your new fuzzies!

blessings on a healthy and vigorous flock.

p.s. get the ducks.

We moved and one of DH's W2's got lost in transit, so we finally just told the company accountant to send a copy. So we should be getting it in a week or so.
Already going through Cackle and Meyer's catalogs......

Glad your getting a flock, however I read you don't want to raise chickens and turkeys together because chickens will give diease to turkeys think its called black head.
A guide to raising chickens states this,so go with the ducks

this is only true if there is ALREADY blackhead disease on the property.

ducks live in wet conditions which can be hard on chickens. but if the ducks have separate housing, all will be fine.

I had chicks, ducks and turkeys last year and seperated the ducks (see posts about stinky, messy but cute ducks) and they did fine. Until they got massacred by dogs. I have moved to another state and am going to make sure my coop is a lot more secure. I am going to put it in the barn. The horses will keep the dogs out.
