It's official. I'm not a cold-blooded murderer after all ....

How is that not "killing one of your flock"?
Method may differ, result is the same
I was just kidding, sorry,.... although when I worked in ICU, I helped end many people's suffering with Morphine drips ordered by their doctors. I gave 18 yrs of my life in the ICU. I have taken the same chicken to the vet twice for 2 different problems, I seriously couldn't take my hands and end a chicken's life, I'd be afraid I would do it wrong and cause suffering.

@Junebugsin , You did everything right by Lunch, you tried nursing her back to health and when it reached the point that it looked like it didn't work, you tried to give her the quickest and most humane death that you could, Little Lunch had other ideas. Cuddle her, make sure she's eating and drinking, keep a close eye on her for a while. As for "tossing her" in the woods, what would your other options be? the trash can? I would have loved to see the look on your hubby's and daughters faces though..lol. Lord forbid that you feel it's time for her to be put down, use the method that you feel is best. Death is ugly no matter how it happens.

When my folks moved in next door to me many years ago (city folks they), they got a calf and three rabbits to raise for meat. Mom told my kids, 8 and 10 at the time, they were forbidden to name the rabbits so they would not get attached to them. We can name them, I said (I am a brat).
No, she insisted.
Sure, I told her. We will name them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

I remembered this when you said ZombieChick's name is Lunch. :lau

To my understanding, hypothermia isn't painful based on what people who've experienced it have reported. I tried to find studies to back it up, but I can only find anecdotal reports. From my experience, when I need to feed my snakes and the appropriately size rodents are unavailable (meaning I need to buy live), I euthenize in the freezer. I never find any signs of a struggle, and the mice or rats are usually curled up like they fell asleep. That's just my 2 cents
I had hypothermia once as a kid. Got lost when I went looking for my runaway dog one winter. It is extremely painful in the middle of it.starts off going numb then It has it's own very painful throb like tiny glass shards are moving through your skin. It lasts for a while while joints start to lock up and have tiny spasms.
Then things start to go numb again. And you get very tired. In my case my lungs started to burn horribly, and every breath felt like a painful elastic balloon. Then you start to panic because you can't stay awake breathe or focus your eyes.
The warming up afterward is actually a burning feeling too. But not as painful as the freezing process.
Please DO NOT freeze your chickens! It is NOT humane.

I tried wringing a cockerell's neck once. He lay there limp, then 5 minutes later he started moving (not in a death-rattle way). It was terrifying! I grabbed the nearest ax and took off his head, hating myself for prolonging his pain.

Must have been a shocking experience for all of you. :hugs I hope Lunch have made it so far, she deserves to live as long as she wants!
