its officially on for my pheasants in Pa..

Go to www.gbwf.org to see a pic of a true green pheasant.None of these birds in these pics looks to be a pure versicolor.I had a chance to purchase a pure pair,I wish I had the room for them.I tend to stick with the ornamentals and not the ringnecks.

Mike,
Sorry to ruffle your feathers, I don't want or need to get into any online argument here. If you want to believe you have pure versicolors, great. The dark "green" bird you have pictured is not a Japanese green in no shape or form. It is a melanistic green phase developed originally from ringneck lines. The melanistics do cross with ringnecks and I have produced the same birds you have. Wilds of PA above crosses them, just ask him if you don't believe me. I have the same book you do and know of the same quote concerning true breeding. It's somewhat misleading, you will get birds that have the characteristics of both, but in a very low percentage. That is a great coffee table picture book, but it is far from a scientific account of pheasant species. Re-read pg 104 -105, the green pheasant and the separate account of Melanistic mutant. If green and mutants were the same, why are they described separately? Just because the mutants are green, doesn't put them in the same catagory as Japanese (versicolor) pheasants. That's my point.

And before you "assume" I read up on Versicolors , I have, for as I said, over a year of research and trying to get the real deal. Green phase mutations are a dime a dozen. I've raised pheasants for 30 years and my profession has involved birds my entire life. If you don't want to believe me and think I'm wrong, I could care less. Sometimes trying to bring something to light just isn't worth it. I'll "assume" you know what your taking about.

Those are very good looking birds.I was not trying to bash you either Mike.People buy birds from others and tell them "this is a pure versicolor"and they are not honest about the birds. Then the buyer taking all pride in his birds(that are beautiful) and showing them off,and then find out they are not what they are supposed to be.And even the guys that have been raising birds for years can be fooled.Ringnecks are very hard because everyone wants to throw all different mutations together to see what they get.

I'm glad to see we're on the same page now, not quabbles here either. I just got a little frustrated since I ran into this problem numerous time while finding the Japanese birds. Your still a good egg in my book!

note: you get crossbreeds by breeding the two..ive been breeding mine long enough to see all the different flavors that come from crossing both..

the colors vary..males may have blue or green or purple chests,,some have rings some don't, hens may be very light to medium dark phases & some with weird simmering green or purple throats.. Ive actually got one hen that is semi choc with a white patch on her throat(sort of a semi pied choc, sounds yummy don't it)..

it just varies and you see this when you grow them out to maturity..

one thing i can say is Ive never gotten a pure melanistic out from a cross of the two..blueback x melanistic..

heres a few different colors from the crosses

So I have gathered from what everyone else has in their pens, that I have two Pure Mutant Melanistics and Versicolor Mutts.
I'm okay with it, and, I will hatch them with pride in the mutt form.
Thanks to all and I hope that some time we can post agian.

You guys are great, that's for the help!
Mike

Hey Mike

Versicolor mutt is not exactly correct either, the birds you posted photos of are "domestic green ringnecks"; attaching the versicolor name to them is like calling a Siberian Husky a Wolf Mutt.

Even though a domestic green ringneck sorta looks like a versicolor, they are quite different. Also versicolor hens are more closely colored to a normal chinese ringneck hen than a domestic green hen.

It has been a few years since I have raised versicolors, so I do not have any photos of my birds on this computer, but here is a photo of a versicolor hen:

In wild ringnecks- breeds that exist in the wild.

Each area of Asia has it's own type of ringneck pheasant:

Chinese
Versicolor
Japanese Green (Northern, Southern, Pacific)
Blacknecked
White Winged
Bianchi
Kirghiz
Manchurian
etc.

All the hens look quite similar.

In domestic ringnecks- colors created in captivity- the hens are quite different.

Hope this helps,

Randy
