Oh no, did you give them something to play with? Mine go out in the rain and look for worms. They get angry if I don't let them.Rain. Rain. Go away. Chickens can't get outside to play.![]()
They have a "playground" of roosts in the run which is covered by sheet metal. Its made up of several large sticks. They get to be outside without being outside. They just look so miserable in there but they dont want out because they hate getting wet.Oh no, did you give them something to play with? Mine go out in the rain and look for worms. They get angry if I don't let them.
They will venture out. But...then they just hide under my porch and complain. If i walk to the coop they all follow me and run back in.My chickens love the rain if it isn't a seriously heavy storm... and it's a good thing, cuz we are in the Pacific northwest where we get our fair share. Heavy wind bothers them more.
Even the Silkies are perfectly content hunting worm and other bugs in a light drizzle.
ETA: if it's the first rain in a long time, it takes them a little while to venture out.
I don't think it's to avoid drowning, though it's been a while since I did that research. I think it's because that is about the only time they can safely come to the surface without drying out.I think some birds realize the worms come to the surface, to avoid drowning. That's a great time for chickens to pick them off. Bad time for worms.
What's so cool is that each flock is different. They will venture out. But...then they just hide under my porch and complain. If i walk to the coop they all follow me and run back in.

Mine hate every form of precipitation.I have some that love the rain and some that hate it. Which is funny because the ones that hate rain love the snow and the ones the love the rain hate snow.
