This is a quick and easy question to answer... .I hope. I am going to be putting the roof on my coop within the next week or two, and yes I am wanting to put shingles on (not wood, but the layer kind). I already have the plywood attached to the rafters and I was wondering if I need to put that black paper (what is it called anyway) under the shingles first?

No. You don't have to have it. In fact, one of the best homebuilders I know never uses it. One of the reasons a lot of builders use paper is that it provides some rain protection for the decking before the shingles are on. Some paper also has lines printed on it that help to keep the rows of shingles straight.

You do know that you put your first run of shingles on the low side with the tabs facing toward the high side, right?

Thank you tracecom. Yes I do know you start at the bottom first and work your way up. If I don't use the paper though wouldn't that increase the deterioration rate of the ply from rain?

Rain isn't good for the decking; it's hardest on plywood and OSB. If you aren't going to get the shingles on fairly quickly, roofing felt (paper) would afford some protection.

Well luckily there isn't any forecast for this stuff you call "rain" what is that stuff anyway. For the next three months it looks like 90 plus degree weather. But maybe I should for when winter comes. It does snow up here
