I have nine mature hens. I guess they're mature. They're around a year old, some 14 months, some 11 months. I've been collecting eggs from them since last August or so. I get six to eight eggs a day. I have always assumed they are all laying and some are just more consistent than others.

I know when my EE lays because she has a blue/green egg. I know when my brown leghorn lays because hers is the only white one. The others are varying shades of brown, from pale tan to medium brown.

Today, the girls (my daughters) came running into the house screaming about what they had found. They had a tiny little brown egg. I'm baffled. I thought they were all laying already. Could it be that one of my hens is only just now starting to lay? Or would a previously laying hen suddenly pop out a tiny egg?

Any ideas? I can post a pic, just haven't gotten it off the camera.

It's probably what's called a "fart" egg or "wind" egg. I bet if you cracked it open there is no yoke inside. Happens occasionally with new layers and other various reasons. If you type fart egg in the search you'll see pics on different threads and different reasons why it happens. Nothing to be worried about, it's common.

It's a fart egg.
