I've Decided to Use a Dog Kennel.....(Update)

Well, we are in the same boat. My DH is deployed to the Middle East now too, and I am trying to make a dog run safe for my chicks.

I am putting hardware cloth around the bottom, I have read that chicken wire isn't strong enough. I think I am going to use zip ties to keep it on.

I am also building a chicken tractor. I am not at all handy, but then again neither is DH, so there is no point waiting for him to get back to start building it.

On the one hand I want to send him pictures of eveything, but on the other hand I want to wait until he gets back and suprise him all at once.

Good luck with your project.

Sounds good, just be sure and put the tarp on at an angle so water can roll off. I have seen kennels collapse and cave in due to a heavy rainfall, were the water just collects in the middle.

I to used a dog kennel. I bought two 16' long 2x4's nailed them together. Ran them long ways along on top of the kennel, and braced in place. so the center was the high point. I then ran some big tarps over the top, and ran another on the side of the kennel for more shade. Then I secured the tarps w/ bungie cords. It rained, I had no low spots for the water to settle!

that's what I use for my chickens although I don't have it covered with tarp...just chicken wire and attempting to get an evergreen vine to grow up over the roofing to shade later (right now it's under a large tree). I have a rabbit hutch inside for their nest boxes and a couple dog igloos for shelter and a concrete floor (we did used to house dogs in there so it was already there before the chickens). I've gone thru a few tarps over the years...didn't last long out here and lost one chicken to either a coon or my dog pulling it thru the fence before putting smaller gage fencing around the bottom so haven't had a problem since.

I want to thank each and every one of you who have helped me along with my "new" adventure. Chicks are growing and so dang cute! Spoke with hubby this a.m. and he reminded me of the coop he had built for the guiena fowl way back when! I thought it got torn apart and thrown out but he told me where to find it. I'm going to transfer them from the smaller rabbit cage into it (after I clean it). Won't be long before I have the kennel complete! Thanks again!! By the way, as soon as I retrieve my camera from my dad's I will post pics if anyone is interested.
