I was late up, and eggs were due to be turned, I was in a rush and dropped one of my white miniature silkie eggs

So gutted as I only had 2 whites.

It fell around 10 cm's but didnt crack, the shell smashed like a hard boiled egg would. The insides are still intact, not that I can see.. Should I throw it? or has it got a chance if I put it back in? The eggs are on day 7.

Whilst i'm here, could anyone help with this dilemma.. My incubator thermometer was massively out and the eggs were incubated at 80-85 f for the first 3 days until I got a digi thermo-hygrometer. Would this have killed off all the eggs? I cant see much when I candle them, but this is my first egg hatching experience..................

Yes, you need to toss the one that smashed. Sometimes when there's a hairline fracture, you can seal the egg with warm wax, but if it's smashed like a hard boiled egg, it will not survive. Sorry!

As far as your temps being low the first few days, it should be fine, but will slow down your day of hatch. I would count the day your temps got up to about 99.5-100 degrees as that is where they should be. I like to keep my humidity for silkies around 40% for the first 18 days and then day 18 when you stop turning, I bump my humidty up to about 65-70% and leave it. Remember, don't open the lid--they need all that humidity to turn and hatch. Since your due date may be a bit off because of the low temps in the beginning, I would just watch carefully and give them extra time to hatch if they don't hatch on due date. If it is, as I think, inevitable. I'm going to open it up to see if it was fertile/developing. It would be roughly on day 5. What should I expect to see in a fertile/unfertile egg?

Absolutely throw it away...sorry!

I would think at day five you'll see a little blood and a tiny embryo(if it was even fertile).

It's really a little early to candle. Day 7 is about the soonest you can expect to see much, that's day 7 after the temp was corrected. Day 10 is better.

I'd discard that egg. If you just can't stand to do that, you could try dipping that whole section in melted paraffin. Very quickly, so the egg doesn't heat up. I wouldn't advise it, but you can try it if you want.

I decided to perform an eggtopsy! But kind of wished I hadnt. The egg (even to my un-trained eye) was fertile and developing. I picked the shell and cut open the white bit (can anyone tell me what that is called?) the heart was still beating and now, over 2 hours later it is still beating. I feel terrible. It's my first hatch and my first fatality. Knowing it was my mistake that it is dying

What shall I do with it now? Leave it to die slowly or put it in the incubator to die.

I really hope I have done the right thing. I wish I had left it in the incubator and given it achance.

How old would anyone guess it is?
