I really hope that someday, a cure will be discovered.

You can drain an abdomen with a syringe and a needle, but it is only temporary relief. For the future, and if you have hatchery hens, there will be a next time, trust me, here are some threads you may want to read through that chronicle some of my experiences with these malfunctions:

Speaking of cures, hens are the only animals who develop spontaneous ovarian cancers like human women so they are studied in the search for a cure for ovarian cancer. Interesting, huh?

Thank you, I'll check those out!

Yes, that is interesting... let's hope a cure is eventually discovered!

In the meantime, you can give her some antibiotics to kill bacteria(esp. E. coli) in her abdomen.

btw,there's a good thread on BYC. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/565084/egg-yolk-peritonitis-prevention-or-management/100.

Antibiotics will only help if the bacteria are sensitive to it. I just got labs back for an E. Coli that was resistant to most drugs. Sure wish there was a way for backyarders to do cost effective sensitivity cultures.

My threads show how we did massive doses (twice the normal dose) of penicillin. That sometimes pushes back the infection so they can rally for a time, but it's chronic, and once they have it one time, they will get it again, trust me. It is a vicious cycle.

That's sad... :(
