So i'm getting 2 chicks not sure the breed or sex but my younger brother is getting them at school, its pretty darn cold no chickens allowed in the house so they're going to have to live outside right after they hatch i have to build the coop myself by hand i have pretty good resources but what can i use(thats cheap) to keep the poor things warm this winter.
 
Lots and lots of blankets. Seriously, you need to keep them in an incubator (indoors) if don't have feathers. If you aren't prepared to do this then maybe it's not such a good idea.
 
You might have a pretty hard time keeping baby chicks warm outside with no broody hen to sit on them at this time of year. I mean the chicks have to stay at like 90 some degrees and that will be hard to accomplish with a light outside.
 
Build them a brooder and put it in the garage at least. So they are out of the rain and wind. They will need a heat lamp or something similar (but a lamp is best) for the first 6 weeks, minimum.
