I've got an interview! [update! update! page 10]

Okay, well by several times I meant that I'd call during one shift and if she wasn't there, I'd try the next shift.
I never told the person who answered the phone my name, so they have no idea who even called.
For all they know, I'm an angry customer wanting to complain to the manager.

As for it making me seem needy and desperate...I am. I need a job now.
Mentally unstable? I don't agree at all.
I have several friends that wouldn't have gotten their jobs if they hadn't called everyday. Employer told them it let them know that they really wanted the job..

I wasn't planning on calling everyday about it anyways.
Just wanted to get ahold of her this once, ask her about it, and let it be.
If she decides not to hire me, whatever. I'll start looking elsewhere.

Last night alone I put in nine more applications to several places.
One was even from Craigslist..

I have another number for one, I'm supposed to call about it instead of filling out an application/sending a resume.
It's like, 15 minutes from my house.

ETA: I really REALLY need a job now. I owe my grandma $400 and my boyfriend's parents $320 for lending me money to get my car fixed..
I hate not having any money..
Well, I lied. I have enough to pay my bills, but if I spent my money to get my car fixed, I wouldn't have money to pay those bills.
So everyone chipped in so I can have reliable transportation, and now I owe everyone money.

Ok, this is what you WON'T hear from a Human Resource person.

I have been an HR Director for 20 years and I agree that it is NOT appropriate to call a job everyday about an application. My thing is, if I didn't call you back, then there is a reason. The reason might be because I am still reviewing applications or I am NOT interested in hiring you. Sure, people can say, well just let the person know so that they won't continue to call but when you have literally hundreds of applications, it is not physically possible to call EVERYONE back that has applied for a job and surely not possible to send out letters or emails. It doesn't work that way in 2011. With so many people looking for jobs these days, you just cannot contact every single person who applies. This includes online applications, walk ins and mailed resumes and applications. For smaller companies with about 20 -50 employees, it may be possible to return applicant calls but for a company that has 500+ employees (like ours) then it is impossible. I wish people could walk in the shoes of an HR person and they would see how hectic it really is. We just don't sit behind a desk and interview people, make calls and take calls. There is so much more to it. (Worker's Comp, Insurance Benefits to include administering 401K plans, Safety related issues, Unemployment Insurance Claims, EEOC, QA reports, Tax Reports, State and Federal Labor Law Compliance, taking phone calls from upset and angry employees, etc. etc. etc.)

After interviewing the person, I always tell them that if we are interested in their application or considering them for hire, I will call them. I purposely DO NOT tell them to check on their application. I DO NOT want all of those phone calls. In addition to the other work that I do, I DO NOT have time to take all of those calls. It is VERY frustrating for an HR person (well, I can only speak for myself) to constantly get all of those nagging calls about someone "checking on the status of their application". If I want to hire you I will call you. PLEASE do not continue to call and harass me. 9 out of 10 times, the HR person already knows who they are interested in and who will be hired and who won't be hired the minute they leave the interview. It's only a matter of checking references, criminal background, drug test, etc.

I agree that a person who calls EVERY DAY appears VERY mentally unstable if they continue to call me. I label them as my "STALKERS". The receptionist already knows to send the APPLICATION STALKERS to voice mail. There have been times when I have had to call the APPLICATION STALKERS and politely let them know that we are NOT hiring and that there is no need to contiune to call. Believe it or not, I have gone against my better judgement and have tried to give these stalkers a job. Guess what? They only worked for 1 or 2 months and then quit with NO notice. I was done!

And please don't think that they receptionist (or person taking the message) will forget to tell them or leave them a message. The HR person is getting the messages. Whether they call back or chose not to, then on well. And please IF you finally talk to the HR person, PLEASE don't tell them that you tried to call them and they didn't return the call. That will give you a few LESS points. That is not appropriate.

As redhen stated, this is the best, realistic advice. Ok, well enough of my rant about applicants and calls. I'm done.

Good Luck to you.

I'm not trying to be "right" or start an argument... but...

I think it's important to understand that ChickenLady is NOT dealing with an HR department or any other kind of manager that deals only with hiring people.

This is a manager that also runs a buisness, works their own shifts, and deals with customers all day. After witnessing the work and distraction levels that restaurant managers deal with.. I understand the reason that every restaurant job that I, and those I know, have obtained has been due to following up on the application.

So, I think it's great for people to know what those in larger companies are looking for... but also great to remember that someone running a buisiness 60+ hours a week may be looking for something else altogether.

Perhaps this is also an answer for those in HR Departments as to why so many applicants do this. If all else fails.. what about putting it in big bold type, "Don't call us, we'll call you!" on their paperwork?

Then you could simply strike them off the list for failure to heed directions.

What a "crazy" world we would live in if everyone who didn't understand the different sets of rules for different venues was really suffering a serious affliction.

ChickenLady is a smart, nice girl... and you.. ChickenLady person, you... I think I am going to have to start a thread of my own to give you the opportunity to come in and redirect it in a gazillion directions for me

You realize that I did this to your Bantam Egg thread too? Why must I only pick on your threads, I wonder?

I know, I know!

They're food related!!!!!

Ohhhh...

I suppose I love you too!

It's all the same. It's a 1 person HR "department" or Personnel. They deal with the same type of issues.

Yes, I understand where you're coming from, but that isn't my situation.
I'm sorry, but I really thought that it came across extremely rude.
If you think that people who are desperate and enthusiastic for a job are crazy and "stalkers", I feel bad for you.
Thank you for your input, but I don't wish to talk about it any longer with you.

And for the record, I rarely call back to check on applications, and the ONLY reason I was going to on this one is because the woman SPECIFICALLY told me that I had the job, but didn't call when she said she would.

Soooooo!
I called twice, within two days, and the manager lady wasn't there.
The people also said they don't take messages.
Alright.

Well, I gave up on it, and decided I didn't get it.
Today, about fifteen minutes ago, I got a phone call from a weird number.
I ignored it, because I don't like answering it if I don't know who it is.
I always say that if it's important, they'll leave a message.
I had a voicemail, and decided to check it immediately.
IT WAS THE PIZZA KING LADY!!!

I called her back and she asked if I was still interested in the job, and I said yes, of course.
She said for the first few weeks, I'd only work 10-15 hours so I didn't get overwhelmed, but I start Sunday at 4pm!

YYYAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!

And yes, Squishy, I thought about starting a thread titled, "For Squishy and LittleChickenLady" so we can just have our own thread and not ruin other threads.

Maybe I should just go re-name the Bantam egg nutriton one.
It's only us who are talking on it now anyways.
