My town just passed a law to allow up to 8 hens in backyards but my HOA said no. No one has complained yet but someone might if they keep up with this. It's a really loud "bak bak bak bak BAGAAAK bak bak bak" until someone runs out to shut them up.

My White Cochin is quiet, and my Australorp seems to be fairly quiet, they are also not the first in the pecking order, not sure if that matters, but they are 2nd and 3rd.

That's a great idea! I was thinking about asking to lease a small piece of land from the lady who owns the farm behind my house to keep the chickens on and getting a rooster or 2 just out of spite

They are rude to us already for no apparent reason. They won't wave back when we wave and don't ever talk to us.

Why not move...You spoke of getting a horse. I am assuming if you can't have chickens...you can't have horses either???? Sounds like a new home is in order. OR I would go talk to my neighbors and ask if the chickens bother them. You might read your HOA rules before you go with what they told you. Some HOA's are run a certain way depending on who is in charge that year and what they want NOT what the covenants say.

My silkies are quiet - they croon and chat but aren't as loud as my other chickens, one of whom is very loud about once a week when laying - speaking of which, please may I have a mini hijack? My rooster has just started crowing, he crows at 7am about five times and then stops but he isn't very old - I am not supposed to have a rooster but am wondering - is he likely to become more noisy and when he gets a bit older and realises what boys do will his personality change? He is very affectionate and tame at the moment - tries to wander in the kitchen off the deck all the time - accompanied to the soothing sounds of my husband shrieking 'out..OUT'!

I agree with the others, Cochins and Silkies are among the quietest of the chicken breeds, but they're still chickens. They are a very social animal, which communicates vocally. I've read that they have over 300 different 'sentences' for communicating. How's that for an animal traditionally called 'dumb'!

If cochins and silkies are still too loud for your situation, then I would encourage you to look into other birds to keep as pets until you can get a property better suited to chickens. It's kind of like someone who reaaaaaaaaaaaally wants a Great Dane, but lives in a small apt. Reality likes to have it's way or the highway sometimes .

This was my thought.as well ... how can chickens not be allowed but horses are? Move ... or enjoy the egg song and allow the.chickens to be chickens .... or try a malamute

Oh I meant I want a horse by boarding or moving to a home in this area with unrestricted acreage. I was just thinking there was some chicken that didn't do the happy egg song thing. I don't mind everyday little clucks to eachother but the loud "bak bak bagaak" has got to stop .
