I've Learned a New Trick! :D

My chooks have a run under their coop that is about 4x4 ft (they're 8 wks old, and it's temporary until we move and build a bigger one) so I often take them out of their coop for about an hour a day while I watch their hysterical behavior. Some of their behavior is NOT so hysterical, like making me chaser them in circles around the coop when it's time to catch em and put them back in their house. So, this chicken mama has learned! If I bring out grapes (their FAVORITE treat) and feed them, they're much easier to catch. Plus, it helps me to bond with them MUCH better than cursing at them while I chase em in circles does

I do the treat thing with my two older babies. They free range around the yard when I am out to keep an eye on them. When it's time to go back in the house, a few grubs sweeten the deal

I use black oil sunflower seeds to point my chooks in the direction I want them to go.


I throw the seeds where I want them to go, and they will chase after the seeds.


Sunflower seeds are this chicken owner's best friend....

how come mine are so hard of peckers? (uhhh...I mean they always peck REALLY HARD AT MY FINGERS when I'm trying to hand feed treats..its like they purposely
go for my hand/fingers ugh...)..I cant hand feed..they are onry li'l buttheads...but they are also 11 wks

Interesting that this thread would come up at this time.


I live in suburban Memphis, not far from where the Wolf River is flooding. The flooding is displacing area wild life, as well as many Memphis residents.


Including snakes.


Today, I went into the main henhouse, and coiled inside one of the laying nests was a small snake, about 2 feet long.


I don't know snakes, so I didn't know if it was poisonous or not.


But I knew I wanted the chickens out of the henhouse quickly so that I could take a hoe and kill the thing.


So I grabbed a jar of sunflower seeds that I keep for such purposes, opened it up, and threw it outside the henhouse. The hens followed the seeds, thus allowing me to close the henhouse with the snake trapped inside and the chooks on the outside.


I killed the snake and put him away inside three garbage bags, then opened the henhouse back up for the chickens.


Boy, I LOVE the power of sunflower seeds to get the chickens to do what I want....

Here's a good one, my chickens had never had boss. I gave them some after reading that they love them and they didnt eat them! I guess I'll keep offering them and see if they catch on.
