Jan. 2022 Hatch-a-long

This egg dipped down further than this today. Way down. I knew it must have been a late Jan. 2 egg. I poked a hole to see if it died, and it looked all white shrink wrapped. I put warm water over the white of the wrap and could see the chick under the the wrap, I could see blood veins, they were not strong, and I could see the chick breathing. It is in an incubator by it's self that has humidity. I am not going to help it for a day or so yet. I don't want to help, and I like chicks to kick off the bottom part of the shell.

I forgot about hatch alongs since I'm not the one incubating. Last month our indian runner just up and went broody. She had only been laying for a couple months, so we were shocked. She laid a bunch of eggs in a few days and found herself a hidey-hole under the stairs in the barn, and started sitting. We initially counted 9, but earlier this week she kicked 5 out of the nest, so we thought she only had a couple left. Nope! She still has at least 8 eggs in there. I'm guessing we should start seeing babies this weekend!

Well shoot! She rolled 5 more out of her nest last night. All had bulging air sacks, about to pip. :( Of course it was way too late for me to save them--no movement this morning and the eggs were really cold.
Maybe they were making noise inside of the egg's and it scared her. Better use an incubator next time, if you really want to have some babies.

I don't give up on an egg even if it got kicked out of a nest for a bit. 12 hrs is how long they can go.

My one shrunk down egg was late from Jan.2 but I probably put it in to hatch a day later. It was still breathing this morning. but when I checked on it this afternoon it was not. I did an egg-topsy on it, and it didn't have any egg contents to draw into it's belly so it would have hatched. But it didn't. That is okay I have a bunch.

Aw man, I’m so sorry about that.
Our runner ducks have hatched 14 ducklings at the most, and they are usually successful with their big broods. But then again, those female ducks are rather finicky. They won’t sit on their eggs until they’ve got an army of them.
